Five Links #74

1. Busy Simulator

“Feign importance with repeating app sounds!”

2. Peascod Relief Panels

Full disclosure: I worked with Peascod to redesign their site in collaboration with We Sort. Their work is equal parts beautiful and fascinating, and these new relief panels are no exception. Quill is personal favourite.

3. Village One’s wishlist/blocklist

I’ve published an ethics statement for the last five years or so: it covers what I will and won’t do, along with sectors I won’t work in. I enjoyed discovering Village One’s wishlist, speaking to sectors and subject matters they’d love to work with.

4. My grandpa was a Nazi

An incredibly personal and open piece from Bastian Allgeier.

Things got complicated between us when I grew into a teenager. I started asking uncomfortable questions from our history lessons. But in his eyes, I was a naive boy who was brainwashed by our school system. The history books were obviously written by the enemies after the war. He was my grandpa. I tried to understand him. I thought he would have a good explanation why he is like he is. But I only saw him more and more for who he really was. His definition of strength was power, influence, money and his network of important people. Behind his jovial facade hid a cruel man. He saw himself as a puppet player and he didn't accept when his puppets didn't play the role they were supposed to. I played my role as a child and then stopped and things no longer worked out between us.

5. In Common With

Toggle the light switch for a glorious transition.

What am I up to?

  • Almost all of my work comes through collaborations, so I’ve put together a short page that collaborators can share with clients that covers the key things to know about me.
  • Reminder that I’m planning to ask some designers about their design process for a new project. If this interests you: who would you want to hear from and what would you like to know?
  • I have space for three design consultations each week – a great way to get design feedback without the commitment of a large project
  • My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 21 January
  • I have limited availability for new projects from January.

If you enjoy discovering the links in the emails, please tell other people about it: give it a share or forward it to someone you think might like it. If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe here.

If you come across a link/app you think might be of interest to other people on this list, hit reply and let me know.

Until next time,

Dave
