Five Links #72

1. Why are we talking about superintelligence?

In one of the more head-turning moments of their interview, when Klein asked Yudkowsky about critics– such as myself –who argue that AI progress is stalling well short of superintelligence, he retorted: “I had to tell these Johnny-come-lately kids to get off my lawn.” In other words, if you’re not one of the original true believers, you shouldn’t be allowed to participate in this discussion! It’s more about righteousness than truth.

2. X-ray scans reveal the hidden risks of cheap batteries

Lumafield scanned 1,054 batteries – around 100 from each brand – and found 33 of them had a serious manufacturing defect known as negative anode overhang. The defect “significantly increases the risk of internal short-circuiting and battery fires” and can reduce the overall life of the battery,” according to Lumafield. All 33 of the batteries with the defects came from the 424 sold by low-cost brands or brands selling counterfeits.

3. AI as Normal Technology

I linked to an interview with Arvind Narayanan back in February 2023 (Five Links #40), where he described ChatGPT as a “bullshit generator”.

Narayanan now has a project trying to reframe the common view of AI.

4. ButtonBuddy

A nice project from Stephanie Eccles covering the accessibility considerations for button colour contrast.

5. The Uncomfortable

A collection of deliberately inconvenient
everyday objects by Athens-based architect Katerina Kamprani.

What am I up to?

  • Reminder that I’m planning to ask some designers about their design process for a new project. If this interests you: who would you want to hear from and what would you like to know?
  • I have space for three design consultations each week – a great way to get design feedback without the commitment of a large project
  • My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 7 January
  • I have limited availability for new projects from January.
