Five Links #70

1. Is Sora the Beginning of the End for OpenAI?

To me, these are the acts of a company that poured tens of billions of investment dollars into creating what they hoped would be the most consequential invention in modern history, only to finally realize that what they wrought, although very cool and powerful, isn’t powerful enough on its own to deliver a new world all at once.

…

Four years later, [Sam Altman]’s betting his company on its ability to sell ads against AI slop and computer-generated pornography. Don’t be distracted by the hype. This shift matters.

2. Everything is Broken

The car took 6 AA batteries. The package came with 4 AA batteries. What in the what. Can you imagine being in the meeting where this is decided? Everybody at that table was either stupid or mean. I can’t even say greedy because someone greedy would just advocate for no batteries at all which at least is understandable.

3. Trying to print something

I think we can all relate to this.

4. The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Era of DEI

Because the truth is, communities focused on justice and community care have always been able to provide for each other, even when persecution or circumstance required that they be clandestine about it. It was never easy, but there was indeed a railroad that did run underground.

5. Above the fold is a myth

A useful link to keep to hand…

What am I up to?

  • A big thank you to Frankie for helping me on a personal project recently. Aside from being an absolutely brilliant human being, Frankie’s a great graphic designer and worth keeping in your Rolodex of designers to call upon.
  • Reminder that I’m planning to ask some designers about their design process for a new project. If this interests you: who would you want to hear from and what would you like to know?
  • I have space for three design consultations each week – a great way to get design feedback without the commitment of a large project
  • Unoffice Hours continue on a fortnightly schedule. The next available slot is 12 November.
  • I have limited availability for new projects from January.
