Five Links #69

1. Typo.town

Lovely new project from Nick Simson, putting together typeface collections from the overwhelming selection on places like Adobe Fonts and Google Fonts.

2. Screen readers do not need to be saved by AI

It’s a ridiculous and exaggerated example, but if I wrote a recipe and I missed out a few steps, none of us would expect an oven to figure it out and fix it! The responsibility for accessibility lies with the person creating the content. We shouldn't be looking for screen readers to try and patch bad content in real-time, it’s on us to communicate clearly in the first place.

3. What’s the deal with WebKit Font Smoothing?

From my observation fonts are rendered closer in weight to other operating systems. To put it another way: macOS web text is rendered abnormally thick by default.

TL;DR: the font-smoothing CSS property is probably fine to use, which is particularly useful when designing/developing for dark mode.

4. BUSY Bar

This kind of seems like a whimsical product, if perhaps a little over-engineered (in a good way). But I can see this being genuinely useful for people working from home, especially with the smart home and system-level integrations/automations.

5. I’m absolutely right!

The number of times Claude Code said “you’re absolutely right” today.

What am I up to?

  • Following up on my curiosity around design process, I’m planning to ask some designers about their process for a new project. If this interests you: who would you want to hear from and what would you like to know?
  • I have space for three design consultations each week – a great way to get design feedback without the commitment of a large project
  • Unoffice Hours continue on a fortnightly schedule. The next available slot is 29 October.
  • I have limited availability for new projects from December.
