Five Links #66
1. Palette generator
This useful tool from Erik Kennedy lets you generate a colour palette using colour stops that are visually equidistant.
Creating visually equidistant palettes is basically impossible to do by hand, yet hugely important for data visualizations. Why? When colors are not visually equidistant, it’s harder to (a) tell them apart in the chart, and (b) compare the chart to the key. I’m sure we’ve all looked at charts where you can hardly use the key since the data colors are so similar.
2. How to write good presentations and present them well
If you follow the advice on these pages and the ones we’ve linked to, you’ll end up with an excellent set of slides, and you’ll be able to present them coherently, with confidence. You’ll make your point. The audience you’re presenting to will know exactly what you’re trying to say, or asking them to do.
3. Privacy Spy
This project grades and monitors privacy policies across a range of services. Useful to get an idea of a company’s privacy practices without having to read policies in detail.
4. Space Elevator
Another great visual project from neal.fun. Scroll up (and keep going)!
5. Commit Mono
Nice open source mono typeface from Eigil Nikolajsen. I enjoyed the low contrast aesthetic, but appreciate it’s likely too low contrast for many – hitting C
on the keyboard kicks it into a higher contrast mode.
What am I up to?
- Last few days to get a design consultation at a reduced rate – these are available until the end of the month.
- Unoffice Hours continue on a fortnightly schedule. The next available slot is 1 October.
- I have limited availability for new projects from November.
