Five Links #64

1. A social media ethos

I’ve been social-media free for a few years, but still engage in Discords/Slack communities where these rules are still useful.

In any conversation you have 3 options: Be rude, Be nice, Say nothing – the latter is usually the most correct answer

2. Footer

A useful gallery of website footer inspiration.

3. Where’s the Shovelware? Why AI Coding Claims Don't Add Up

Some interesting perspective on AI coding from someone who genuinely hoped it was good (emphasis my own):

The most interesting thing about these charts is what they’re not showing. They’re not showing a sudden spike or hockey-stick line of growth. They’re flat at best. There’s no shovelware surge. There’s no sudden indie boom occurring post-2022/2023. You could not tell looking at these charts when AI-assisted coding became widely adopted. The core premise is flawed. Nobody is shipping more than before.

4. The File Folder Structure Every Designer Needs

This seems like a folder structure I should adopt, but I also feel like cloud tools (Figma, Cleanshot, etc) muddy the water a little. Where do they sit in this kind of structure?

I’m also curious how the year structure works for projects that span multiple years. Are they copied to each year or simply updated to the year they were last edited in? Either way, some useful takeaways from this.

5. How to Introduce Two People via Email: Sample Scripts

I’ve always found responding to email intros a bit awkward, so I appreciate this straightforward approach.

But I’m also left wondering – what do people do to respond and take these initial connections further? If there’s a potential project or collaboration, that gives some direction to a possible meet, but I’m kind of stumped on general intros. Any good tips?

What am I up to?

  • Unoffice Hours continue on a fortnightly schedule. The next available slot is 1 October.
  • I’m offering design consultations to give feedback on design work without the commitment of a larger project. Discounted rate available until the end of this month.
  • I have limited availability for new projects from November.

If you enjoy discovering the links in the emails, please tell other people about it: give it a share or forward it to someone you think might like it. If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe here.

If you come across a link/app you think might be of interest to other people on this list, hit reply and let me know.

Until next time,

Dave
