Five links for your inbox from this week.

1. Tips for Mastodon

Lots of people are trying Mastodon for the first time. If that’s you, this guide from Per Axbom may be helpful.

(And feel free to give me a follow: mastodon.social/@davesmyth).

2. Rova podcast player volunteers user locations

This fascinating investigation by Podnews reveals how a podcast player sent user location data to podcast publishers without their knowledge or permission.

3. Converting iMac 5k display to external monitor

Earlier this year, I replaced my 2014 iMac. It served me well, but had some issues: it was cutting out randomly, didn’t support the latest versions of macOS and temperatures were regularly around the 100º (C) mark.

I was disappointed to learn that these iMacs don’t support target display mode, which would have allowed me to use it as an external display. But this video from Luke Miani shows how it might be possible – and it’s pretty tempting to give this a go.

4. Comedy wildlife photos

Finalists from the 2022 Comedy Wildlife Photo awards – a little joy for your morning.

5. PenTips

I recently bought a 12.9“ iPad to use as a portable second display. I was considering using a Paperlike screen protector as it’s recommended by almost all YouTubers…but it seems these aren’t without issue (namely: reducing clarity of the screen and wearing through the Apple Pencil tip more quickly).

These PenTips look like a really interesting alternative to creating resistance on the screen. And there are two types: PenTips Lite are slip-on covers for the penil, but PenTips 2 completely replaces the Apple Pencil tip, making them harder to lose.
