Absorbing

Five links for your inbox from this week.

1. Shroud.email

Protect email from spammers and services you don’t trust (similar to iCloud’s Hide My Email or 1Password’s Masked Email services).

2. Mac Recommendations

When I started researching the replacement machine for my trusty old 2014 iMac, I realised I’d completely missed the impact of Apple’s shift to their new processors. It turns out the new M-series chips are complete game-changers and the old Mac-buying rules (e.g. “max out your processor”) don’t always apply.

Here are some notes on what to look out for if you’re in the market for a new Mac and haven’t bought one since the Intel-era (late 2020).

3. Don’t use tel in links

This Twitter exchange appeared in my feed recently – really interesting to learn how tel links may offer a suboptimal experience.

4. Fastmail generate aliases to keep newsletter recipients private

I subscribed to Fastmail’s newsletter and was surprised to see they use Mailchimp to send them. But it turns out they create temporary email aliases for each subscriber every time they send an email. It’s very cool to see privacy-conscious companies walking the walk.

5. Telepathy

OSINT tool for Telegram: “Telepathy can archive Telegram chats, list their members, and tell you where forwarded messages have come from. It also does some analysis for you, like telling you which group members posts most.”

Projects + other things

  • Why I switched from a Popular Backup Service™
  • Scruples is evolving, more news soon – currently booking projects for Autumn.
  • My Unoffice Hours are available every other Wednesday. Next slot: September 7th.

If you enjoy the newsletter, please give it a share on Twitter or forward it to someone you think might like it. If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe here.

And if you come across a link/app you think might be of interest to other people on this list, hit reply and let me know.

Until next time,

Dave
