Five links for your inbox from this week.
1. Cookie Database
Understand what the cookies on your computer are and how they’re used.
2. US cell carriers probably sell your data
US cell carriers have a side hustle: using your “web history, app use and sometimes location data to help advertisers target you.” This articles show you how to opt-out.
3. Spurious Correlations
Graphs that plot similar graphs that bear absolutely no relation except the shape of the line.
4. 25 Mac settings to change
Another super helpful video to change macOS defaults. Well worth watching (though would recommend 1.25–1.5x speed).
5. Meta sued over patient data
It was always only a matter of time before a case like this occurred. Of course the medical providers bear some responsibility here, but it will be interesting to see how the case pans out: does Meta have any responsibility for the data it receives or the source of data [re]used to target users?
Projects + other things
- 182.5 days alcohol-free I unintentionally gave up alcohol for good six months ago. Here are some notes on how that happened, what I’ve noticed and a book recommendation.
- What’s the deal with privacy-focused analytics? If you start looking at how to make a website more privacy-focused, analytics will come up almost immediately. Why is this such a hot topic?
- Scruples: we’re booking new projects from September.
- My Unoffice Hours are available every other Wednesday. Next slot: August 10th.
