Five links for your inbox from this week.
1. How to hard-lock an iPhone
Everyone with an iPhone should know how to do this:
If you have an iPhone 8 or later, you can hard-lock the device (that is, require a passcode to unlock rather than Face/Touch ID) by either:
- Holding the power + volume buttons for about 2 seconds
- Pressing the power button 5 times quickly
2. Dark Patterns is now Deceptive Design
‘Deceptive design’ is a much more inclusive term and a better description of the patterns being deployed. Spread the word.
3. Sandbery’s pivot to philanthropy
Sheryl Sandberg announced this month that she’s resigning from Facebook—now called Meta—to focus on her philanthropy. Her work there is done.
During her 14 years at the company, she’s done so much damage to our society that we may never recover. The simple truth is that you cannot simultaneously dedicate yourself to making untold fortunes for a giant corporation and to championing a social good.
This may not be a pivot to data justive warrior, but this get-rich-working-at-horrendous-tech-co before using those funds for conscience-clearing philanthropy has more than a hint of Maria Farrell’s Prodigal Techbro about it.
4. Conference Code of Conduct
Hosting a conference or a meetup? This is a concise plain-language code of conduct – worth having at the ready.
5. Install PHP on macOS Monterey
I recently bought my first M1 Mac and this great article on getting multiple PHP versions installed was super handy.
