Five Links #105

1. Design Principles in Practice

Make better design decisions when the right answer isn't obvious.

2. I believe in pixels

In a world seemingly full of retina displays, this is a nice reminder:

I like designing on screens where you can make out the individual pixels. There’s something grounding about it. Text and interfaces look much better on high-pixel-density screens, but those aren’t yet common enough to design primarily with them in mind.

Also appreciated the RGB squares!

3. 1Picture1000Words

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

I say… Prove it.

Aside: rare to see a URL with adjacent hyphens.

4. 1-bit pixel art emojis

A lovely emoji project, created in just a few weeks.

5. Flexoki

Flexoki is an inky color scheme for prose and code. Flexoki is designed for reading and writing on digital screens. It is inspired by analog inks and warm shades of paper.

Flexoki is minimalistic and high-contrast. The colors are calibrated for legibility and perceptual balance across devices and when switching between light and dark modes.

What am I up to?

  • I wrote a retrospective on five years of running Unoffice Hours
  • Unusually, I have a couple of projects wrapping up at the same time and have some availability for new projects this month
  • I’ve not mentioned it for a while, but I still offer consultations for one-on-one design guidance
  • Recently published my own answers to the design process questions
  • My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 22 July
