Five Links #102

1. ∪ of Target Audiences (Accessibility, SEO, AEO/GEO)

There’s a great Venn diagram at the end of this one:

But SEO also drove bad accessibility practices, such as alt text keyword stuffing, low-contrast text, verbose headings, link text built around keywords, gratuitous landing pages, and more.

2. How building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight

The results? When we launched, the number of people completing the form doubled. The analytics people didn’t even know where these users were coming from. Of course, your javascript-based analytics package doesn’t see the users you are bouncing because of javascript failures. It was a flood!

3. performative-ui

Components that signal how oversubscribed your funding round is.

4. European.Social

Europe has a strong ecosystem of social companies and a deep well of expertise in designing and operating social protocols. We are building on this to move away from large monopolistic platforms with their authoritarian governance and editorial positions, and are joining forces to establish a diverse and resilient information infrastructure in Europe.

5. In the Battle for Attention

I’ve long-held a belief that “discovery” features on social media only serve to elevate content I don’t want to see. The work required to find what I do want to see is essential, because it guarantees my genuine interest. I went looking for it, and it’s worth finding. The moment something is brought to my attention, I have to question the reason and rationale it was delivered to my eyeballs. Who does it benefit? Me, or someone else? Probably someone else.

What am I up to?

  • Recently published the next design process interview: Stéphanie Walter.
  • My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 24 June
  • I have limited availability for new projects from July.
