** DashKite Newsletter
February 12th, 2021
We’re a day late this week, but I hope not even one dollar short: * We announce our first commercial API for Link Previews. * We explore the limits of Metcalfe’s Law and whether we should really be using it to assign value to the social Web (spoiler: we should not). * The tale can at last be told: why we pushed back our product launch. * A new feature: Ask Of The Week, which is exactly what it sounds like.

** Announcing Our Link Preview API
I’m excited to share with you the launch of our first commercially available API. We’re starting simple with link previews (https://www.dashkite.com/products/link-preview) . A link preview shows a summary of the page referenced by a URL. Given a link, our API will return the corresponding title, author, publisher, and so on. We use this API in our applications, like Kiki (https://www.dashkite.com/products/kiki) . We’ll use it in Civic (https://www.dashkite.com/products/civic) when it launches. Given the work that goes into making sure we’re producing the best data, why not make it available to everyone?

** Silicon Valley Doesn’t Understand Value
When describing the value of a social network, it is a cliche to reach for Metcalfe’s Law. It represents value in a tidy little equation. It doesn’t ask very much of you and provides a premise for companies to pursue growth at the cost of everything else. That’s plainly incomplete. If we introduce a person-centered value definition, we can immediately see that we’re just getting started.

** It’s Right There In The Name
Or, Why We Pushed Back Our Product Launch.
Part 1: In which we begin to listen to the voices inside our head…or maybe it was Research Twitter.
It was the late fall of 2019, still months before I’d hear the dreaded phrase COVID-19. We were working fervently toward the Beta release of DashKite, which, at the time, was both the company name and the name of our flagship product. There were a few tickets that still loomed large on our roadmap. But we were resolute in our determination to launch our Beta by the end of the year.

** Next Issue
Our Inconstant Editors gave us extra time to include our promised features from last week. However, we were only able to squeeze in Part 1 of It’s Right In the Name. Next week, we’ll have exciting conclusion for you, along with an update on how our API launch went. After that, our Inconstant Editors willing, we’re going to switch it up a bit and talk about how to concept of consent informs our product design.
** Ask Of The Week
Each week, we close by asking you to tell your friends about our little fledgling newsletter. This hasn’t seemed to work. So we thought we might mix it up and see what works best for you, our dear readers. This week, we’d ask that you, if you deem them worthy, that you share one of our posts on your platform of choice. Thank you! (And please let us know if you do.)
And, of course, you can still tell your friends about us.
