Dr. Lisa Nakamura (https://twitter.com/lnakamur) gave a TED talk based on a course she teaches at the University of Michigan, titled “The Internet is a Trash Fire” (https://www.ted.com/talks/lisa_nakamura_the_internet_is_a_trash_fire_here_s_how_to_fix_it) . She explains right in her opening that such a phrase needs no explanation. Everyone intuitively understands that phrase, even though people from marginalized communities face disproportionate abuse.

** The Myth Of The Hard Problem Of Moderation
Last week, I addressed a question we often get about whether people will pay for social media. Let’s address another one this week: isn’t moderation a hard problem? After all, Big Social hasn’t been able to solve it. So how can we? Often, a moderation edge case follows: how do you differentiate between porn and sex ed? Or between sarcasm and hate speech? Big Tech actively perpetuates the idea that these are challenging scenarios. That gives them the pretext to continue profiting from not solving them. It’s effective because they do seem challenging.
