2024-05-08: Extrapolation, Extropians, Extravagance
(If you work at FF/FFDW 🄽 links will send you to a local, editable page in the Filecoin Foundation Notion. If you are in the Filecoin ecosystem, you may be able to join the #monologue-danny Slack channel where I answer questions, take meeting bookings, talk to myself and the other voices in my head. In the glorious decentralized ocap-enabled future, such data-hoardings will be a thing of the past, but we live for now in a fallen ACL world.)
Three Things I Did
1. War roomed
Up at 7AM (despite the late night), to participate in a “war room” session, planning some of the work for the next year of Filecoin. It was a different (but familiar) feel from our internal meetings: questions posed, but with silence indicating no immediate answers (internally, we definitely talk to fill the empty spaces); a spreadsheet being filled in the background (I have some kind of allergic reaction to spreadsheets in a shared zoom chat. ALL THE CELLS! TOO SMALL TO SEE!). I had that thing where I thought everyone was curtly talking over my contributions, then realised that my mic wasn’t turned on. War is hell.
2. Coworked
In Galen McAndrew 🄽 ‘s literal backyard, being gently defended from mosquitos while I scribbled anticipated scenarios in a childish Remarkable 2 🄽 scrawl. I realise I’m always trying to parcel the future into fuzzy, but defined paths. All that scenario planning 🄽 I read about and did in the past has clearly stuck in my head.
3. Judged
Finally! The FIL-RetroPGF-1 🄽 judging is done! The voters at the Foundation shared our votes afterwards, and we were quite close to each other. We all steered away supporting the big names, in pursuit of plucky underdogs, which I hope doesn’t mean everybody did that. Talking of scenario planning — I may try and write a simulator of some kind to show what the results of differen voting patterns are; it’s not entirely intuitive given the current calculations.
(Breaking news: I think naughty Will Scott 🄽 already managed to leak the results!)
TIL
- I’m not sure yet, but I think Filecoin has not one but two Filecoin Naming Systems. Ah, so many levels of irony, all mutually incompatible.
Links Du Jour
- My old co-editor Dave Green 🄽 runs a retro public good of his own, a Twitter account that pours over back issues of Need To Know 🄽, our anciente tech gossip newsletter. This week, he dug up our pointing to a 1998 Journal of Transhumanism, which contains some now-familiar faces. We billed it at the time as “the return of the Extropians”, which just goes to show how deep the rabbit-hole goes…
