2024-04-23: Numbers, TechSoup, Krazam
(If you work at FF/FFDW 🄽 links will send you to a local, editable page in the Filecoin Foundation Notion. If you are in the Filecoin ecosystem, you may be able to join the #monologue-danny Slack channel where I answer questions, take meeting bookings, talk to myself and the other voices in my head. In the glorious decentralized ocap-enabled future, such data-hoardings will be a thing of the past, but we live for now in a fallen ACL world.)
Three Things I Did
1. Checked in with the Numbers Protocol folks
We have a lot of crossover with their work, and they’re one of the chains that Starling Lab🄽 uses to timestamp their archives, and IPFS🄽 as their datastore. As a Taiwan-based organization, they’ve already had experience funding local photojournalists to try out provenance-preserving tech, and they’re deep in preparation for the upcoming Taiwanese elections. 2024 is basically the global year of elections, with 49% of the world’s population voting, and Taiwan is up there as one of the most significant. (Numbers has been working in a few other countries too, including Indonesia and India).
2. Prepped for TechSoup’s Building the Commons🄽
If you’re around on Wednesday at 10:00AM PT/ 1:00PM ET/ 19:00 CET, you too can see some of the crazy guerilla archiving hijinx we and our buddies are up to. OpenArchive🄽 on how to preserve evidence if you’re being targeted by the more powerful, TRANSFER Data Trust🄽 will talk on how artists can self-host their own digital art as well as trusting it to curators, and the hitherto aforementioned forthwith Starling Lab🄽 will show how digital archiving helped Rolling Stone re-open a 30-year-old cold case. It’s the top table of stories and tech. BE THERE! Tickets still available! Watch out for the scalpers!
3. Failed to do a BIg Thing because of all the little things
Ugh, had some writing to do, but also had a gazillion little things. And yes, one of them was setting up my laptop, but that wasn’t everything, all right? If I was my own life coach, I would say that you should do the big thing first, but I think my life coach is a morning person. Or maybe just evening Danny, postponing the big thing until tomorrow. Which is what I am doing right now.
TIL
- So obviously I had to reinstall all the things🄽 on the new lappie, but it was a nice surprise to install Brave🄽, kick up a new crypto wallet, and see Filecoin and ZCash🄽 all set up as defaults. This was part of a grant we did with Brave, and it’s just so much easier when it’s all pre-installed for you to use.
Links Du Jour
- Osborn’s Law: Variables Won’t, Constants Aren’t. I felt like a genius the other day when I thought I’d come up with this phrase, but of course I was just lifting it from the hours I spent reading weird lists on bulletin boards as a kid.
- Krazam OS. I am a forever fan of Krazam, and I hope they sell out and get rich one day.
