2024-04-15: Gossip, Safety, Money
(If you work at FF/FFDW 🄽 links will send you to a local, editable page in the Filecoin Foundation Notion. If you are in the Filecoin ecosystem, you may be able to join the #monologue-danny Slack channel where I answer questions, take meeting bookings, talk to myself and the other voices in my head. In the glorious decentralized ocap-enabled future, such data-hoardings will be a thing of the past, but we live for now in a fallen ACL world.)
Three Things I Did
1. Worked over the Weekend
It was, at last, Funding the Commons Berkeley 2024🄽 this weekend. I ran a couple of workshops on the Saturday while Liz🄽 spoke on the main stage, slept in gloriously on Sunday morning, and had Sunday dinner at Skates On The Bay with folks mulling over how to support the commons (including Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight🄽, and SJ Klein🄽 from the People’s Republic of Wikipedians, Tony Lai🄽, Computational Lawyer, and a guy who I had a marvellous conversation with, and who followed up with me, but on one of a bazillion different inboxes I have to hop between during the average day, and whose message I can no longer find. INTEROP NOW.
2. Presented
Today was spent at the RetroPGF Lab Day. I gave a small yet bouncy talk about interfacing extremely transactional, fast-moving exotic environments like crypto with other humans on earth, especially open source developers and institutions. I am rather enjoying being a diplomatic envoy between the weird future and the worried present. I was sad nobody laughed out loud at my UML joke: I hope some people smiled inwardly. This talk is helping me thrash out my money is for machines🄽 manifesto. If you, like me, enjoy pouring over other people’s cryptic presentation decks, dive in.
3. Gossiped
A somewhat sad tale overheard at an after-party: a disastrous co-operative venture that would have been avoidable if some team-members had known quite how self-destructive one of their co-founders was (something a lot of other people knew, but weren’t tuned into the same backchannels). I listened and sympathised, and thought of how life-saving gossip can be, in certain contexts.
TIL
- Continuing to unpack what I learned from Britta Gustafson🄽 : the San Francisco Maritime Museum holds an annual 24 hour Moby Dick readathon.
- That the STFIL🄽 developers have, at last, been granted access to a lawyer. The first good news for a while.
Links Du Jour
- I’m a big fan of Sacha Chua and her Emacs Updates. Purest public good.
- Currently exploring logseq🄽 for personal knowledgement management, after a recommendation by bengo🄽. Could it be my open source Notion killer (at least until Subconscious / Noosphere🄽 is usable)?
