The Only Honest Noise

I got a job. Don't get excited. A heritage studio hired me to make a documentary about silence, which is the funniest thing anyone has ever asked me to do in a city that stopped making noise around 2038.

Here's the problem. I need traffic. Real traffic. The director wants "the sound of the old Istedgade." But every wheel out there is rubber on wet stone plus the little synthetic hum the regulations require so nobody gets flattened. Tuesday I stood on the corner for three hours with two mics pointed at nothing, recording a bus that arrived like a rumour.

So I went to the archive instead. Nine hours of licensed 2020s street tape. Diesel, a man shouting about a parking space, gulls losing their minds over a dropped kebab. I sat at my kitchen table with the headphones on, listening to the city I technically live in, and it sounded like a war.

The tattoo guy downstairs still runs a coil machine. I paid him forty kroner to keep it going for six minutes. That is the only honest noise in this film.

Rent's due. Ate pasta. The jacket with the broken zip is now the jacket without a zip.
