Postkort fra 2043: The Motor With No Secrets

The Motor With No Secrets

Poul,

Something happened at the commons Tuesday that I am still chewing on.

A girl came down the pontoon with a cargo trike, back wheel dead. One of the new hub motors — no brushes, no oil, magnets doing the whole job in silence. I have spent my life listening to machinery tell me what hurts. This one had nothing to say.

So I opened it. And Poul: it opened. Six bolts, no glue, no potted resin, a little card inside with the winding diagram printed on it. Somebody in a factory in Sønderborg decided a stranger would one day want to look inside, and they made room for me.

I sat on the deck for an hour with the parts on a canvas mat just understanding it. Not fixing — understanding. Haven't felt that since the engine room on the Katrine, and I was twenty-three then and much stupider.

Fault was a cracked sensor lead. Nine minutes, once I stopped admiring.

She asked what she owed. I said tell the next one it can be opened.

Still learning things at sixty-four. Ridiculous.

L.

PS: Harbor flat as glass this morning. Gulls loud, water warm enough to swim if I were braver.
