Postkort fra 2043: The Hands That Learned Bearings

The Hands That Learned Bearings

Poul,

Something happened at the commons Tuesday that I want to tell you before I forget it.

A girl comes in, nine years old maybe, with her father's kitchen fan in a bag. Dead. She'd already peeled the diagnostic patch off it herself and it told her, in that cheerful voice they all have now, that the unit was "beyond economical service" and offered her a replacement in two hours. She didn't want a replacement. She wanted this one.

So we opened it. Bearing was dry, nothing else. I let her spin the shaft with her own fingers, and Poul — she went completely quiet. You know that quiet. It's the one we had in the engine room at four in the morning when you could hear a fault before the gauge saw it.

We printed a bushing, packed it, and it ran. She held it up to her ear like a shell.

Her father subscribes to a service that would have replaced the whole thing for free. She still chose the four hours with an old man and a rag.

I am not too proud to say I went out on deck afterwards and had a moment about it.

L.

PS: Flat calm in the harbour all week. The water looks like poured tin and the gulls are behaving disgracefully.
