Postkort fra 2043: The Girl With the Broken Hoover

Poul, gamle ven,
You will enjoy this one.
A girl came down to the pontoon Tuesday, sixteen maybe, carrying a household drone in a tote bag like a dead chicken. Her mother had told her the repair commons was full of old men who would talk her ear off. Correct, I said. Sit down.
The thing was leased, of course. Locked firmware, the usual insult. But the fault was mechanical — a bearing in the lift arm, worn oval. I have a drawer of bearings, Poul. You have seen the drawer. She watched me match one by eye and said that was "actually kind of feral," which I have decided is a compliment.
Two hours. She did the last of it herself, tongue between her teeth like a proper apprentice. When it lifted off the workbench she shrieked, and every heron on Mogens's solar roof went up at once. Best sound in the harbour this year.
She is coming back Saturday with her father's coffee grinder. I told her to bring the grinder and leave the father.
L.
PS: Flat calm here, warm for September, and the water smells of nothing at all — which after all these years I still count as a win.
