Last month’s big news was that my course on Docker has now been released! (you can find out more about it below). And this month’s big news announcement is that our next .NET Oxford event will be a .NET 8 launch event! And, wait for it… it’ll be hosted at the William’s F1 Experience Centre! 🤯 One of our long-term members, Matt Davidson, is a Principal Software Engineer at Williams, and has kindly arranged for us to host the event there! And it’s a seriously amazing venue! This is going to be GOOD! 🏎️

I’ll be doing a talk on what’s new in Blazor; Nick Chapsas will be doing live demos on something new that I’m not allowed to talk about yet as it’s under NDA! (it’s pretty awesome though!); Stuart Lang will be doing a talk on C#12; plus a few other talks too!

There were two episodes published this month - the first with Jamie Taylor, the host of The Modern .NET Show (formally the .NET Core podcast) - and the second with Nick Chapsas to talk about his Dometrain teaching platform…

In this episode, I was joined by the host of The Modern .NET Show, Jamie Taylor to chat about both .NET and podcasting! We also chatted about various other things like productivity, remote working and life balance, supporting junior developers, and plenty more!

Episode 58: Dometrain - with Nick Chapsas

In this episode, I was joined for the second time by Nick Chapsas! This time, we chatted about his new Dometrain teaching platform. Nick started off creating courses on his own website, nickchapsas.com, which he’s recently rebranded to Dometrain and reached out to other authors to also create courses - myself included! I’ve recently released a Docker course on Dometrain, and we chatted about my experience doing this, as well as Nick’s story and motivations behind building Dometrain.

I also recorded another episode with Valentina Cupać where we chatted about Hexagonal Architecture. This’ll be the next one to come out, probably next week…

DDD East Midlands

The main event I attended in October was the DDD East Midlands conference, where I did a short talk on “Git under the covers”, as well as taking part as a mentor in a Friday-evening “Speed Mentoring” event there - which was great fun!

A huge congrats to Jess Brentnall and the DDDEM team for organising such an awesome event!

And a big thanks to Mia Gordon for arranging and organising the speed mentoring event that was on the evening before. I haven’t done (or even heard of) ‘speed mentoring before’ - was such a great idea. I’ll be recording a podcast episode with Mia where we’ll be chatting about it.

News items and dev picks

Here are my dev picks this month…

• .NET Conf 2023! - Obviously, the big one is that .NET Conf and the .NET 8 launch will be in just a couple of weeks! So expect a ton of links in next month’s newsletter!
• MongoDB Provider for Entity Framework Core Now Available in Public Preview - I saw this mentioned in this tweet by Damien Guard. I must admit, I’ve never tried Entity Framework with a document database before, even though it does support it (for example, there’s a Cosmos provider). Maybe now’s the time for me to give it a go!
• Speaker Buddy System by Marc Duiker - This is a GitHub repository that describes the “Speaker Buddy System” - an approach for conference speakers and organizers, to increase speaker confidence, and ensure a smooth speaker experience, before, during and after a speaking session.
• Harvard's CS50 full computer science University course now published online on YouTube - FreeCodeCamp has published the entire 25-hour course on their YouTube channel. You'll learn everything from abstraction and algorithms to data structures and security.
• Honeycomb’s Observability Glossary - I’ve had Martin Thwaites from Honeycomb on the podcast to chat about OpenTelemetry before, and I saw a Tweet recently that they have an Observability Glossary full of observability terminology.
• London .NET YouTube channel - Just had an email through saying that the London .NET user group have started publishing their talks on YouTube and have created a new channel. They have some great talks, so worth subscribing to!

I’m really sorry for the bad language in this month’s dev comic pick - but it really cracked me up, so had to go with this as my pick. You can blame Adam Storr for sending it to me! 🤣
