For some radio listening, there was a great BBC National Orchestra of Wales concert last Thursday recorded in Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff. It featured works by Gabriella Smith (Tumblebird Contrails)–a response to a trip to the dramatic Point Reyes on the Californian coast, then a world premiere conducted by the composer and BBC NOW’s own principal trombone Simon Wills (Nora Barnacle Assumes Command), and finally a youthful Charles Ives’ Symphony (No.1 in D minor) composed around 1900 when he was mourning the loss of his musician father. There’s also an interval interview with Simon Wills.

Geoffrey Paterson conducts Ives, and Simon Wills conducts a world premiere.
