If you’d like some New Year listening–the premise of radio’s Desert Island Disks (first broadcast in 1942) is deceptively simple, but often results in entertaining, revealing and moving profiles of the castaway. This week was no exception, with the composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. Choices included JS Bach, Puccini and Stevie Wonder – listen.

Mark was born in June 1960 in the Thames estuary town of Corringham in Essex. His musical talent was nurtured by his parents and he studied composition at the junior department at the Royal College of Music from age fourteen. There he met the composer Oliver Knussen who became his tutor, mentor, and life-long friend.
