Concert news
Happy Autumn! Our recent concert with the Gwent Chamber Orchestra (Stephen Broom-conducting Julia Watkins-leader) was very well attended, and we had a superb evening’s entertainment.
They performed the following programme:
Mozart: Divertimento K.205 for two horns and strings
Dvorak: Serenade for Strings
Mozart: Exsultate Jubilate with Soprano Lowri Probert (from Bannau Brycheiniog)
Haydn: Symphony number 22 in E flat “The Philosopher”.
Stephen Broom provided great introductory background to the performances and I think it’s fair to say the audience was held spellbound throughout. The fine acoustic of St Michael and All Angels really came into its own.
Lowri Probert's performance of the Mozart motet was electrifying. After graduating with a first-class degree from the Royal Northern College of Music she joined Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she is currently studying with Janice Chapman and Marie Vassiliou.
Next year's opening concert
We'll now have our Winter break, but start next year's season with a very special concert with Rachel Podger on Saturday 9th March 2024, 7:30 pm. Tickets will be made available early in the New Year.
Rachel Podger was the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Prize in October 2015, Gramophone Artist of the Year 2018, and Ambassador for REMA’s Early Music Day 2020. Rachel is a dedicated educator and holds an honorary position at both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

And finally…
As you may know, Mike Stroud retired as Chair of Friends of Cwmdu Music this Summer after years of unstinting and knowledgeable work. He received a presentation on behalf of us all, of Rachel Podger recordings. He proved a bit camera shy, but here are he and Shelly looking over the gift. Many thanks for all your hard work Mike!
