no, I'm not talking about the nickelodeon slime

Hello! It's Thursday. How are these weeks speeding by and yet also not moving at all? It's truly amazing!

This one will hopefully be a short one, but for all of you on Instagram Reels or TikTok, has anyone else seen the slime videos? Apparently (according to this one video I saw on IG Reels), slime became a nationwide trend in 2016, but had been popular for years before that. But I'm not so fascinated in the concept of people playing with slime, and more the people who are becoming entrepreneurs in the slime-making business.

Just a quick search for slime on IG, and you see some of the lowers accounts with almost 250k followers with the larger accounts with over a million followers and many of the remaining in the higher end of the range. Every time these companies restock, they immediately sell out. I have no idea how my IG reels content managed to maneuver itself into being interested in slime, but you have to admit, watching them make slime is fascinating.

But every one of these videos is the same! The Siri voice reading out a hilarious complaint, them making a slime that -- oops! Looks like food, but isn't! Then the creator will squish it as though to prove that it is slime. How big is this market that there can be dozens of businesses selling them? You go into the bios of some of the makers and a lot of them are in college, which is fine, but how did so many get into this industry? How are they getting industrial sized stand mixers in order to create the slime?!?!?! I want one!

I don't have the answers! I'm not doing this research! I'm just so fascinated because either this market has been around forever and suddenly my Instagram is like "Whoa! She's stressed out, maybe she could use some SLIME" or it's just there are so many suddenly that there's no choice but for my feed to be inundated with this. Who knows. But either way, now that I've said slime 800 times, I'm sure it'll show up in your feeds as well too! Suffer with me!

Has anyone else been seeing this, or am I just that stressed out person who Instagram keeps recommending these things to??

Anyway - link time!
  • The fiddle leaf fig is out, the thai constellation monstera is in! Or - a group of people decide which plants will become the next big plant. Which apparently is an entire process that takes many groups of people to decide which is kind of horrifyingly fascinating! You mean I didn't ~choose~ to want the fiddle leaf fig? Curse you, capitalism!

  • Someone did a thread of classical music in cartoons. These in particular are about the Looney Tunes mostly, but I was definitely introduced to classical music through cartoons. One I remember in particular is Carmen from Hey! Arnold.  So much so when I watched Carmen when the Met was showing it a few years ago, I was like "wait why do I know this holy crap."

  • Have you seen the low budget Netflix intro made from yarn? Well, here you go. It's truly beautiful what can be made when one is bored.
Till next time!
