May you ride eternal, shiny and chrome.
Sometimes you have a week where nothing is redeemable and you immediately give up and go to sleep. And somedays you have a week where you successfully macgyver a standing desk, chat with some dang good friends, and a lovely person decides to say fuck it and give you free cookies.
And sometimes those are the same week and you really have to lean into the positives because it's what really important.
Hello! Happy Thursday. This week continues to be a dumpster fire but instead of focusing on that too much, I have been consuming content that brings me joy. Are things looking up? Not really, but like - I have a plant that is about 75% my height that I grew from a tiny little plant and it has baby plants! I got to grab lunch with friends and it was delightful to see them in the flesh! I've been reading some incredible books! I have been watching some fun things! This week, I've really been doing my best at seeing what can I do that makes things a little better instead of focusing on things that aren't great. Because whew boy - a lot isn't great but I can't keep dwelling on it.
This isn't one of the recommendations because I feel like everyone and their mom has done it but! Speaking of delightful things, you should watch Abbott Elementary! Quinta Brunson was once a writer on Buzzfeed Video and so I feel like people my age know her super well and it's truly a delight to watch her thrive! Like do I know her personally? Heck no. But will I cheer for her? Of course!!
Anyway, I hope you're having an alright week and if not, focus on the small positives because goodness I know it can be difficult but you gotta try.

- So this hunk of a man came across my timeline and WHEW. He's the champion of Japanese body building this year and he did the first pitch for a baseball game and you know what? This man definitely was a body builder! He done built that body!!! I'm not going to lie, his first pitch was kinda terrible but then someone told me about 50 Cents first pitch and no one should ever feel bad at sports! That's so bad!!
- If you know about my work, you know I've been working with Jenifer Lewis on her new book, Walking In My Joy and whew! I cannot tell you about it even though I have some stories! But I will say it has been a delight to watch people who love her become even more in love with her. She has such an energy and a presence and really can command a room (or a staircase of book employees in singing... thank god that video isn't saved anywhere). Anyway! You should check her out on Trevor Noah. She was quite good there.
- If you know me? You know I love Mad Mad: Fury Road. A movie I walked into knowing nothing about and walked out loving with ever fiber of my being. This is truly a perfect movie. So when the oral history came out in 2020, I was hooked. To be honest, I could read even more. Maybe even... a book's worth? WELL HOW LUCKY FOR ME that Blood, Sweat & Chrome came out a little after I started working at HC and let me tell you this makes this movie somehow even better.
- From the fact that this film was truly a nightmare in preproduction (they got shut down I think about seven times), to the small tidbits that made the movie (the War Boys would work out with photos of the actor who played Immortan Joe in the gym and truly ended up worshipping him), to some of the true chaos behind the scenes, this book is really for people who love this movie or love seeing how movies are made. Because wow, if people didn't care about this film, this would not have happened because the universe kept putting stoppers in the way and George Miller was like "Cute. Anyway, what if I screen test Eminem for Max??"
- The effort and care that this creative team, from the largest to the smallest role, put into this fucking movie was insane, and the accolades are truly worth it. If you haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road, you are in for a treat.
