Cover reveal and pre-order for Lupus in Fabula!

Plus, upcoming zines, a big life change, and some rad book/music/movie recommendations

The Big Reveal

We’re finally ready to reveal the cover for Briar Ripley Page’s horror and Weird fiction collection Lupus in Fabula! The immeasurably talented Sadia Bies created the art and Alan Lastufka designed the text—a perfect pairing. Behold!

Cover depicts someone in a green-tiled bathroom, leaning over a sink, with a wolf bursting from their back.

Briar’s collection is a perfect blend of weird, grotesque, sad, and sexy—in other words, everything I love in fiction!

While Lupus in Fabula doesn’t come out until January 13th, we’re opening up preorders today. We especially encourage folks to preorder from the Cursed Morsels store. It’s the best way to support both Briar and the press financially—and we’ll throw in a free “Creature in the Bathroom”-themed zine!

Upcoming Zines

Speaking of zines, we’re running another submission call for our next zine bundle. Our first bundle included strange landlord stories, erotic horror essays, blackout poetry about the worst man in Florida, reviews of cursed films, and tales of strange birds in broken worlds. I recently went to a zine fest and found that folks were especially excited about the Florida Man issue. This next bundle is also guaranteed to include banger after banger. Themes include “All Cops Are B____ (fill in the blank)”, “My Morbid Childhood,” “Tech Bro Terrors,” “Reviews of Reality TV Shows That Don’t Exist,” and a special issue that will remain a secret for the moment.

So, if you’re a writer, consider submitting to the submission call, which closes at the end of this month, and if you’re a reader, keep an eye out for the bundle, which should appear in our store just in time for Halloween.

Issue #6: All Cops Are B_____ (fill in the blank) (microfiction, poetry, and nonfiction) Issue #7: My Morbid Childhood (creative nonfiction about your experiences as a morbid child) Issue #8: Tech Bro Terrors (microfiction and poetry) Issue #9: Reviews of Reality TV Shows That Don’t Exist

Cursed Morsels Press is relocating!

With the exception of a semester abroad (välkomna, svenksa läsare!), I’ve spent my whole life in Nebraska. I love this state with all my heart, but it’s also time for a change.

Recently, I got a job in Minneapolis, so I’ll be moving to the frozen north this September. This move will briefly disrupt Cursed Morsels operations, but overall, I don’t anticipate much interference. If anything, it’ll be exciting and energizing to be in the same city as one of my favorite indie horror presses, Weirdpunk Books, and some extremely cool horror and Weird fiction writers, including Sam Richard, Joe Koch, Patrick Barb, and Carson Winter, to name a few.

My big hope is that this move will allow me to participate in more in-person book events. It’s always a blast to talk horror and weird shit with people face to face. Can’t wait to do more of it in the Twin Cities!

Some book, movie, and music recommendations

Lately, I’ve been reading Profane Altars: Weird Sword and Sorcery, edited by Sam Richard and published by Weirdpunk Books. In my opinion, fantasy is at its best when it embraces grime and strangeness, and this anthology nails that vibe. Snag a copy here.

On the movie front, my boyfriend and I recently watched Lisa Frankenstein, an incredibly funny, beautifully designed, and all-around charming movie that didn’t get enough love on its release. My hope is that it follows the trajectory of Jennifer’s Body, another Diablo Cody-penned film that got the critical reappraisal it needed a few years after its release. Don’t miss this one, y’all. It’s a blast.

Switching over to music, I’ve been obsessed with Adrian Knight for years, but it took a couple years for his most recent album to really click for me. Now that it’s clicked, I’m obsessed. Knight is particularly adept at conveying a sense of sleazy, haunting melancholy that I’ve never heard from anyone else. The track “I Look for Lauren” will almost certainly be my favorite I’ve heard this year. Highly recommended.
