Cuckoo's Nest Press Newsletter #8

It’s another newsletter, yay! How is it almost March already?! Sheesh...

January was fairly productive for me, art-wise – I started a personal self-indulgent art project called “Drawing Stuff That Could Be Album Covers.” Here’s a few of those. I never fully gave up on my dream of illustrating album covers, even though 1) I do not personally know anyone in a band, 2) even if I did, there’s very little money in it.

A digital shaded pencil drawing of a figure with their face obscured by a collage of many different images in small frames, including: several eyes, a closeup of a tree trunk, an insect brooch, a streetlamp, and a shelf of wine bottles.
A bunch of fish in a quasi medieval manuscript style. There's a sunfish, a weird dunkleosteus thing with huge tusks, a weird coelacanth looking dude, and a few other weird guys that don't resemble any specific fish, including a very grumpy looking fish with legs at the bottom.
A nine panel grid of shaded digital pencil drawings of different gargoyles and/or grotesque stone sculptures, with a variety of designs and off putting facial expressions. Look at all those funny little guys! Perfect friends!

Anyway, all that is to say, “Please hire me to draw your album cover, I would be so good at it.”

Here’s a photo of Last Band On Earth on the shelf at Indigo. I think this might be the first time one of my books has officially made it there?

A photo of four copies of Last Band On Earth on the shelf at Indigo, the largest bookstore chain in Canada. It’s right between an Image book called Lazarus and a Harper Alley book called Les Normaux.

If I could be so bold as to ask a favour: if you’ve read and enjoyed Last Band On Earth, would you be so kind as to write a five star review on Goodreads or Amazon? As much as I tried to get people to review the book, it barely got any coverage apart from a few very small blogs – which, I won’t lie, really bums me out because I think it’s really good and deserved to get more coverage. I got lots of buzz for Look Straight Ahead, after all – though I do realize there were a lot more media outlets covering graphic novels back then (2013).
Anyway, venting aside, Amazon etc reviews really do help me out, so if you’d be so kind as to take the time to write one, I’d really appreciate it! Thank you! :)

Moving on -

I was going to put this in the last newsletter, but I was still in the process of finishing them up – here’s some new book covers I did for my good friend Oli Jacobs, for his noir series Mr Blank.

Cover art for BAD DOG – A Mr Blank Venture, by Oli Jacobs. The cover is a red rorschach inkblot type design in red, depicting a snarling three headed Cerebus like dog.
Cover art for DEAD MAN’S HAND – A Mr Blank Plot, by Oli Jacobs. This cover has the same style of inkblot design, but this one is in yellow and shows a hand holding five playing cards.

For the first year ever, I remembered it was Goblin Week! (One of those online art challenges which takes place during the last week of January and I believe was started by Evan Dahm of Rice Boy/Order Of Tales/Vattu fame) So here’s some of the highlights from that:

A hairy metalhead goblin dude with corpse paint, spiked wristbands, a battle vest, the whole bit.
A yellow lizard-like goblin crouching and holding a makeshift spear.
A white line drawing on a solid black background of a goblin dancing while carrying a big stick over its shoulders, almost ritualistically. The lineart layer has been duplicated in orange and offset underneath the white lines. Text outside the border reads "Goblin Week, Number Five" as though this were an album cover for a band called Goblin Week, with the album titled Number Five.

The last one also doubles as “Drawing things that could be album covers.”

I successfully filled all three of my Punk Pet Portrait commission slots over the Christmas season, so here’s how those turned out!

A black cat with a spiked punk hairdo and a ragged cat-sized t-shirt with the sleeves torn off.
Two cats! Also with spiked punk hairdos and dressed in punk regalia! Wow!

I’ve opened more slots for these, and you can get your own by filling out this form here! Two slots are currently still available.

Finally, I will be tabling at Nerdvana at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon on Saturday, March 28th. This is the replacement for the Prairie Pop Culture Celebration show at the same venue, which friends of mine have done before but I’ve somehow always managed to miss the signup window. Excited to table at the new show!

That’s it for now. I have some more exciting things happening behind the scenes and can’t wait to share them with you soon! Till next time,

- E
