Cuckoo's Nest Press Newsletter #6

Hey everyone,

I promised I’d send out a newsletter update once the shop links to buy Last Band On Earth were active, and now...ta-da!!!

Front cover of The Last Band On Earth complete edition, featuring Nat, a woman with pink hair dressed in punk style clothes with a bass guitar strapped to her back, sitting on top of a pile of broken instruments. The colour scheme is entirely neon CMYK shades. The background is bright yellow with bright pink text reading "The Last Band On Earth, by Elaine M. Will"

Physical books are here! CLICK! Although Canada is currently the only option on the link, I can ship to other countries as well, just not the US, unfortunately – if you’re in another country and would like a book, just message me on Ko-Fi and let me know and I’ll set something up.

If you are in the US, you can still get the book here!

Finally, digital ones are here! (Or also here on Itch if that’s more your speed!)

A traditional ink and gouache illustration of two small black blobs with eyes peering out of a storm drain. The colour scheme is entirely monochrome shades of blue.
“Little Guys No. 6”

I finally got this piece finished, and you can also buy the original here!

“Infinity Wyrm”

And I put this guy back up in the shop as well (These ones ARE Canada only, sorry!!!)

TCAF: The show was packed, and the crowds never really thinned out. Over the course of the weekend, I made more money than I’ve ever made at any show. I kept trying to leave my table and go around to talk to other creators, but every time I did that I got claustrophobic and had to go back - you really couldn’t move at all. I don’t think it really dawned on me until then: it’s a miracle that anyone ever stops at my table at these shows, and especially this show, given how many exhibitors there were and how thick the crowds were. The new venue seems to have worked out well, despite the somewhat janky table arrangements. Looking forward to future TCAFs here!

Prairie Comics Festival: also good! I admit I was feeling a bit demoralized after a slow Saturday, but Sunday was crazy busy (which NEVER happens at any other show, Saturday is always the busier day) which made up for it. I wonder if the fact that parking in downtown Winnipeg is free on Sundays had something to do with this. This one was also in a new venue this year – the Manitoba Museum, parts of which were under construction. The elevator didn’t seem to be working on the second day, which is not great for accessibility reasons and also for everyone who had big carts and wagons of stuff to get downstairs to the parking garage...hopefully they got everything out alright!!

SaskAssemble: A small one-day show in my hometown – I think I talked about this one last year. I went in with pretty low expectations, mostly looking forward to visiting with my comics friends that I don’t get to see very often and not so much to huge sales – to my surprise, the show was really busy and I made more than twice as much as I expected. Money, of course, isn’t everything, but it’s always nice to make good sales at shows!

Another thing worth mentioning: I had at least three people at Prairie Comics Festival and two people at SaskAssemble come up to me and say “oh, I read this! It’s really good!” as they pointed to Last Band On Earth. I want to say this is the first time that’s happened with a book of mine? (Certainly the first time I’ve had this many people do it)

A series of photos of old cars and farm trucks
Some photos from the Antique Auto Museum in Elkhorn, MB

For some reason I never think to take any pictures at shows, so here’s some old cars from an antique auto museum in Elkhorn, MB that we stopped at on the way home from Winnipeg.

A greyscale illustration with a paper texture overlaid on top to make it look like an old photograph, of four grizzled looking fishermen posing with their catch, a huge monstrous looking fish with a face resembling a human skull. The faces of the fishermen are obscured by dark stains.
“Welcome To Ferrendale” cover illustration

I got to do another book cover design for my author friend Oli Jacobs, for his latest horror novel “Welcome To Ferrendale.” Above is the illustration by itself without the text. Here’s the book synopsis from his own website: “A trio of prisoners manage to escape and end up in the seaside village of Ferrendale. While trying to maintain their cover as visitors, they all start to become aware all is not normal in the isolated village.”
Check out the book here!

A digital sketch of a dragon in silhouette, perched on the roof of an abandoned farmhouse. The sky is dark crimson red and yellow, almost like fire.
Two ink sketches of a cat, one where it's perched on a rock with an abandoned monastery in the background, and another where it's approaching a small creek/stream of water.
A woodcut style illustration of a grain elevator with a psychedelic looking swirly sky

And here’s some other stuff I’ve been working on. There’s actually more than this, but I’ll save it for the next newsletter...

Cover image for Mark Allard-Will's "Photo Illustration" Kickstarter. The image depicts a photograph on one side, of a film camera and a tablet stylus pen, and an illustration of a pencil holder filled with various pens and other drawing supplies on the other side.

Finally, I should let you all know that my hubby Mark is running another Kickstarter, this time to fund a cool hybrid photography/comic illustration book! Check out the page for more info here!
(Illustration on the right hand side of the above image is by the amazing Audra Balion)

That’s all for this edition - I’ll try not to let so much time elapse between now and the next one, haha. See you soon!
