Cuckoo's Nest Press Newsletter #3

Hey, it’s been a while - I think I have a few new subscribers from SaskAssemble last weekend, so hello and welcome!

Banner for "The Last Band On Earth," a graphic novel by OP, Elaine M. Will. The artwork depicts a woman with pink hair wearing a backwards baseball cap, denim jacket, white t-shirt, black leggings, and knee-high boots sitting on a pile of broken instruments. The woman also has a bass guitar slung over one shoulder. The colour palette is entirely Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, White, and Black.

This is gonna be a shorter newsletter, but the main thing to report (and the reason this is later than usual) is that The Last Band On Earth Kickstarter pre-launch page is now live! Sign up to be notified when the campaign launches, October 15th! I should mention that I did put Issue 1 and Issue 2 up to read for free on my Patreon as continuous scroll pages for ease of use, so now you don’t need to download a PDF first – if you haven’t read any of the comic before, please check them out!

In other news...my Graphic Medicine Award trophy arrived, and I definitely need to show you that:

My Graphic Medicine Award trophy for Best Shortform Comic, "Spiral Sessions." The trophy is composed of two flat pieces of green plastic fastened to each other: one an old fashioned medicine bottle reading "Graphic Medicine Award" and the other a tilted comic book page behind the bottle. Both pieces sit on a white plastic base. The trophy is flanked on the right side by a glass octopus, and on the left side by an old broken film camera.

I also had time to make several new acrylic paintings:

An acrylic painting on cardboard, of a little smiling cartoon medieval guardsman dude with a shield and a spear, one of several different logos for the Burger Baron restaurant chain - except in this version, the little guy is melting. Still smiling, though!
An acrylic painting of a wyrm (serpent-like limbless, wingless dragon) coiled into the shape of an infinity symbol about to eat its own tail like an ourobouros. Its head is surrounded by a crest that ends in several sharp points and it has three horns (that we can see) on its head and one more on its nose. It has a shiny yellow bauble/eye in the middle of its forehead, as well as smaller baubles/jewels embedded in its scales, running the entire length of its body. It has a second head on its back half and many different spikes along its body. Its tail tapers to a point and ends in a sharklike fin. Its front half is painted in shades of blue, while its back half is a dark purple with orange and yellow accents.
An acrylic painting of a dead tree trunk split down the middle into three pieces, surrounded by small rocks and weeds. A small creature, a black blob with white eyes, is perched on the inside edge of the trunk. Another identical creature is crawling on the ground behind the other side of the trunk.
Buddo, everyone's favourite 4,900 year old stone figurine, rendered in acrylic paint on cardboard as a PEZ candy dispenser. Off to the side are two graffiti-style tags reading
(see this Bluesky post for more context about Buddo: https://bsky.app/profile/drdavidboyce.bsky.social/post/3l26q6r3bqk2e )

I might put some of these up for sale, I haven’t really decided! You can always keep an eye on the shop if I ever make up my mind.

A series of four photographs of a sea foam green typewriter from different angles

I had a few people comment that they really liked the pay phone reference images in last month’s newsletter, so I decided to try & continue that thread – here are some images of a typewriter I saw for sale at a charity shop. It was priced at only $10, so of course the next time I went it was gone (alas, I’m not really in the market for a typewriter), and I should have turned it around and gotten some pictures of the backside, but here they are – higher res versions available on my Tumblr page here.

A digital illustration of an old hollowed-out car, an Austin Mini, parked in a dirt driveway, with several ghosts drifting out. A fence, some trees, and a house next door can be seen in the background. The colour palette is monochrome red.
A photograph of two 4 x 6 mini prints. The prints are of paintings depicting small black blob creatures with white eyes. In the first painting, the creatures are in a park peeking out from behind two trees. In the second painting, two creatures are crawling out of the ditch at an abandoned rail crossing.

I have some new prints in the shop – my Ghost Car illustration as an 8 x 10” print, and two Little Guys 4 x 6” mini prints. I’m letting you know about this even though you’ll also be able to get these as add-ons through the Kickstarter, if you’d prefer to wait and do that.

Cover artwork for Dire Beasts, depicting a stylized cluster of werewolf heads, all snarling and baring teeth, and gradually morphing into tree branches at the edges. Red block serif letters read “Dire Beasts"

Lastly, I’d like to give a shoutout to another comics Kickstarter - the Dire Beasts anthology, edited by Justin Currie and featuring a stellar line-up of Canadian prairie-based artists and writers. As of this writing, there’s still a few more days to back the campaign if you want a copy!

That’s it for this edition! Here’s that link for the Last Band On Earth pre-launch, once again - my next newsletter will probably come out in time for the last quarter of the campaign, so I’ll only remind you about it via this channel one more time, haha. ;)

Thanks so much for reading, and I’ll talk to you again soon!
