Watch this week
Most macro-dense 72 hours of Q2 starts now: FOMC Apr 28-29 (possibly Powell's final meeting), five Mag 7 earnings Wed-Thu, Q1 GDP & PCE Apr 30 — all while Brent sits at $107 on Hormuz closure. Any hawkish Fed surprise or PCE upside print could rapidly unwind April's entire risk rally.
1. Bitcoin & crypto market
BTC opened at $78,674 (midnight UTC daily open) and is trading at ~$79,032 at the NYSE open — up ~0.5% from the daily open and approaching the key $80,000 resistance level. April is now up 14%, the strongest monthly performance in over a year.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs extended their inflow streak to 9 consecutive days with $2.43B net inflows in April — the strongest monthly tally since January 2025. Total AUM across 11 products now exceeds $96.5B.
The Bitcoin 2026 Conference opens today in Las Vegas (Apr 27-29). Expect announcements around corporate treasury BTC adoption and ETF product expansions — historically these conferences generate price volatility within 48 hours of keynote announcements.
Chiliz (CHZ) launches Fan Token V2.0 today. Also: 120+ crypto firms including Coinbase, Ripple, and Kraken signed a joint letter urging the Senate to advance the CLARITY Act.
2. Stocks
S&P 500 opened lower at ~7,143 (-0.3% from Friday's record close of 7,165); Nasdaq futures also dipped ~0.3% pre-market as stalled Iran peace talks pushed oil higher. April MTD: S&P +9%, Nasdaq +15%, Dow +6%.
Biggest earnings week of Q2: Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft all report Wednesday; Apple reports Thursday. All up 10%+ in April — earnings need to deliver to justify all-time-high valuations.
FOMC meeting Apr 28-29 — 100% priced for a hold at 3.50-3.75%. This is likely Jerome Powell's final meeting as Fed chair before Kevin Warsh takes over in May.
Q1 2026 GDP estimate drops April 30 alongside PCE inflation data. CPI already jumped to 3.3% in March. If PCE prints hot, the market's assumption of two 2026 rate cuts gets repriced on the spot.
3. Oil & macro
WTI crude at $95.66/barrel (+1.3%); Brent above $107/barrel — the Strait of Hormuz closure (US-Iran tensions) removed a critical global oil chokepoint handling 20% of world supply. This is a supply shock, not a short-term spike.
Fed's Mary Daly stated the oil shock 'extends the timeline' for getting inflation back to 2%. IMF downgraded global growth to 3.1% for 2026 and raised global headline inflation to 4.4%. US gas prices hit a 4-year high at $4.14/gallon.
The macro calendar Apr 28-30 is stacked: Fed decision, Q1 GDP first estimate, and PCE data all land within 48 hours — this is the key risk window heading into month-end.
4. Gold
Gold trading around $4,710/oz — essentially flat week-over-week — a counterintuitive non-move given active geopolitical conflict. Capital is rotating into equities and AI tech rather than defensive safe havens.
Selloff pressure from rising real rate expectations: oil-driven inflation = sticky CPI = no rate cuts = higher for longer. Gold bulls need either a dovish Fed surprise or an equity wobble to regain momentum.
Key support zone $4,660-$4,700; a break below heading into the Fed meeting could accelerate momentum selling. Watch gold alongside BTC as a risk-off gauge post-FOMC.
5. Altcoins & memecoins
Bitcoin dominance near 60%; Altcoin Season Index ~39/100 — firmly Bitcoin Season. DOGE ~$0.098, SHIB ~$0.0000062, SOL ~$86 — all significantly underperforming BTC in April. Broad altcoin rotation absent.
STRK (StarkNet) up 15%+ in 7 days ahead of STRKX20 mainnet launch April 30 — biggest Ethereum Layer 2 upgrade of 2026. XRP building on CLARITY Act speculation; community target $10 if bill advances this quarter.
FTX creditor payout record date April 30 — known, predictable catalyst with mechanical sell pressure. Watch for unusual volume in FTX-adjacent plays heading into month-end.
Meme coin market cap ~$60B; CHZ Fan Token V2.0 launches today. TRUMP +6%, DOGE +3.8% over the past 7 days. Memecoin alpha remains isolated and momentum-driven.
6. The big picture today
Risk is broadly on: stocks near all-time highs, BTC approaching $80K, ETF inflows surging for 9 straight days. April is shaping up as one of the strongest months across asset classes since 2024.
Main threat: FOMC tone (Tue-Wed), five Mag 7 earnings (Wed-Thu), Q1 GDP and PCE all land by Apr 30. Every major risk asset is priced for good news — the margin for disappointment is thin.
US-Iran tensions and the Hormuz closure remain the unresolved wildcard — any escalation spikes oil further and simultaneously crushes risk assets across crypto and equities.
This week is binary: if FOMC stays neutral, Mag 7 beats, and PCE doesn't shock, BTC clears $80K and S&P extends to new highs. If any of those three fail, expect a swift 5-10% correction across risk.
