Private cloud, beans and franks, and bathrooms - Coté Memo #29

There was some interesting container orchestration news this week which we discussed in Software Defined Talk.

If you’re into Slack, I started a Slack channel for Software Defined Talk listeners. There’s other channels in there, of course, but if you’re into extremely low-traffic stuff - or want to make it higher traffic, send me a DM in Twitter or email me at sdt@cote.wtf and I’ll add you.

It’s been two weeks since I sent this out, so pardon the bulk below.

Podcasts

There’s several more podcasts in the Coté Show Variety Podcast, namely from Barton George and I co-interviewing folks at DevOpsDays Austin and OSCON. Check that show out, and subscribe already!

Live-to-tape from ChefConf 2017, in Austin, we talk about what’s going on in Chef land now, esp. in relation to compliance/policy and Habitat. We also discuss the Texas bathroom bill and Matt Ray’s latest trip report on international travel. There’s an important update on Coté’s bean position as well.

Pivotal Conversations #67: Cloud Foundry Volume Services, with Julian Hjortshoj
Pivotal Conversations #67: Cloud Foundry Volume Services, with Julian Hjortshoj
File systems are seemingly inescapable, if not just for “legacy” applications, perhaps just because they fit the requirements. The cloud-native world at first eschews “local storage,” but the need to continue using that metaphor persists. Plus, in many existing, so called “legacy” systems, you have to work with both new types of storage and good, old fashioned filesystems, even NFS! In this episode, Coté talks with DellEMC’s Julian Hjortshoj who works on Cloud Foundry Volume Services about his (and Paul Warren)‘s talk at CF Summit on this topic. We first cover the basics of what’s needed, how it works from the perspective of a user (i.e., an application developer) and how it’s all handled behind the scenes, all the way back to the actual storage systems.

A look at RAD application vendor Appian’s IPO. These kinds of things are interesting in the tech world to gauge Wall Street’s reaction, appetite, and tastes around similar IPOs, e.g., software development, broadly speaking.

Cloud-Native Strategy Workshop, June 7th in D.C.

In just a few days, June 7th, Mark Heckler and I will be hosting a workshop on what cloud-native is and tales of putting it in place at large organizations. It’s in DC, so it’s sort of targeted at Federal people, but it’ll be good general content as well. I’ll be talking the meatware, while Mark will go over the actual coding and real-work. Come check it out: it’s free, and certainly better than going into the office!

Also, I’ll be at the DC Cloud-Native Meetup that same night, June 7th, if you’re interested in seeing a smaller version of the content.

You wouldn’t know it recently, but it’s true that America is a nation of immigrants. Each new wave faces the same toy-grabbing greed from the previous wave. This is a long, interesting write-up of Italians in the Delta.

The Bright Ops Future - Reinventing Operations in the Age of Cloud-Na…
Slides from a Forrester/Pivotal webinar. As with most good analyst webinars, there’s some survey data on the topic that’s useful for checking in on the state of things, here, the motivations behind DevOps and cloud-native, and also the mismatch between what product teams want (faster, more frequent releases) and what operations can actually do.
