Song lore, Charitindie, and an announcement!
Small Talk Newsletter #1
Baby's first newsletter!! I’ll be using this to share updates on what I’ve been up to and what’s to come, sneak peeks, song backstories, and general musings. Let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see in these! Your wish is my command (if you have fun, reasonable wishes).
What I’ve been up to
I recently released my song “Darling We’ve Got Time” along with my very first music video!
I wrote Darling We've Got Time way back in the summer of 2017, when me and my friends had just started getting driver's licenses and had lots of time to kill. As a lot of Midwestern teens do, we spent a lot of that time driving around, meandering downtown, and loitering on top of parking garages. Even though we weren't doing much, these are some of my most cherished memories because I was with people I loved, escaping stress and obligation and getting a new taste of freedom.
In honor of those days, a knit frog and rabbit go to some of our old haunts in the music video: a parking garage downtown, a park in my neighborhood, and an old abandoned waterslide covered in graffiti tags called Zoom Flume. Here's an old photo merged with one from the music video:
Last Saturday I played a set for Charitindie, a charity livestream of indie musicians supporting the Trevor Project.
If you'd like to watch my set or any of the other talented artists', the full stream is now on YouTube! You can find that, donation links, and info for any artists interested in joining in next time in this Moths and Giraffes article. I played two unreleased songs in my set, in case you want to be the cool kids who knew about them first!
What's that? A new song coming soon?
Drumroll, please! You guys are the first to hear this, but my fourth single, "Small Talk" is coming out on Friday, May 19. More info on this soon, but here's a little blurb about it for now:
"Ask me 'bout the weather, while I'm parting with my dress." In their latest chamber pop single, Copeland James walks the anxious tightrope of feeling exposed but not vulnerable in a casual relationship. Drawing inspiration from dodie and Emily King, Copeland's introspective lyrics and playful rhythms are accompanied by lush strings, layered harmonies, and nostalgic piano.

Upcoming gigs
For my Bloomington locals, I'll be playing at the Cosmic Songwriter's Festival on Wednesday, May 17th at the Orbit Room. This is one of the biggest gigs I've played so far, and I'm very stoked about it!
I'm also in the planning stages for a really exciting gig on June 16th-it's still super tentative and I don't have the details yet, but mark your calendars if you're in town and I'll fill you in soon!
Once again, thank you all for joining my mailing list. Social media moves so fast, and I'm really excited to have somewhere I can slow down are share my thoughts and projects with you. Talk to you soon! x
