New 🌜Late Night Breakdown — Pinch to Zoom in Apple Maps

Hello techno-curious design friends~

My second newsletter! Welcome to the new folks who've signed up over the past week 🤠, and welcome back to OGs.

Workshop recap

I ran the 2nd day of the beta workshop this past Saturday, which was about Encoding Interfaces as Textual Data. I changed the format based on participant feedback — instead of a live demo and small group breakouts, I prepared lecture slides and had small activities sprinkled in that we did together in Figjam. It was super fun, and you can see some of the slides and read about some learnings in this Twitter thread.

Introducing 🌜Late Night Breakdowns — Computing for Designers video series 🎥

Happy Tuesday, everyone, and thank you for signing up for this newsletter. I know updates have been sparse, but we kicked off the first beta cohort this past weekend and I'm learning a lot about how to teach!

🧠 I've always enjoyed making breakdown or explanation documents and videos on concepts (like this Framer Coding Mental Model breakdown I made 2 years ago)

👀 Yesterday, I stumbled across an interesting example on Twitter that I felt could help cement a concept we discussed in the first workshop — "mapping" — or taking one range of numbers and converting it to another.

🎥 So, here's a late night, semi-delirious, Late Night Breakdown of the Apple Pay Cash gradient dot microinteraction, complete with WACKY yt thumbnail... !
