Protecting, Curating and Making Spaces for Women’s Film and Television History - Wednesday, December 1, 2021, 5:30pm
Dear Members,
You are warmly invited to the following event organised by the network. Please do join us!
Protecting, Curating and Making Spaces for Women’s Film and Television History
Hosted by the Women’s Film and Television History Network
1 December 2021, Wednesday, 5.30pm on Zoom, please register via Eventbrite
In recent years, the unequal presence of women working in film and television has acquired a high profile in the contemporary industry and has been much debated in the media. There have always been scholars and archivists who have prioritised women in film and television, but as a whole our disciplines have historically kept women’s work at the side lines. Since the WFTHN first began as a series of workshops in 2009, we have sought to encourage the research, archiving, and curation of women’s participation in screen media, as well as the resources, repositories and outlets for supporting this work.
This event highlights and champions these goals through a lively and passionate discussion about film archiving, women in early television and the launch of the WFTHN revamped website.
- 5.30-5.45 Nathalie Morris talks with Melanie Bell about women and archiving at the British Film Institute and her new role at the Academy Museum, Los Angeles.
Nathalie was one of the original founders of the Network and championed the archiving and curation of women in screen media through her role as Head of Special Collections (BFI). She joins Melanie Bell in this talk to reflect on the topic of protecting and curating materials for women's film & TV history, effective strategies for reaching (& creating) audiences for these histories, and her ambitions for her new role as Collections Curator at the Academy Museum.
- 5.45-6.30 The Network is excited to launch Sarah Arnold’s new book on Gender and Early Television: Mapping Women's Role in Emerging US and British Media, 1850-1950 (Bloomsbury, 2021).
In this short presentation Sarah will reflect on her research for this important project and how her participation in the network’s conference played a key role in its development. Sarah will be introduced by leading media historian and former BBC producer Kate Murphy.
- 6.30-7.00 Network members Sarah Smyth and Daisy Richards will lead the launch of our new website, showcasing its new resources and demonstrating how it can benefit and support our members and champion women’s film and television history.
There will be plenty of time for questions, comments and feedback throughout the launch, which will be chaired by Shelley Cobb.
We hope you can join us on Wednesday 1st December, 5.30pm for what promises to be an exciting and energising event!
If you are not yet a member, please consider joining us! It’s easy to do; use the link below. We are particularly looking for more specialists in television history to join us, so if you are one, please join, and if you know some, please send them our information.
