American Society for the History of Rhetoric Interest Group Call
American Society for the History of Rhetoric Interest Group Call
The American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR) Interest Group invites paper and panel proposals for competitive selection. We especially welcome works that address the convention theme, “Communicating Our Future.”
In addition to the broad range of approaches that continually seek to understand and critique rhetorics of and by history, further distinguishing ASHR as a site of scholarly creativity and rigor, SSCA’s 2023 Conference Theme of “Communicating Our Future” presents our scholars a unique opportunity to address the ways in which the past simultaneously influences the present as well as the future.
We especially encourage the submission of works that address how these rhetorics of and by history play a crucial role in the development of current and future rhetorical discourse, particularly at the discursive intersection(s) of politics, power, ideology, oppression, and resistance.
Additionally, our conference site of St. Petersburg, Florida presents yet another unique opportunity to apply our scholarship and the conference theme to the current and future rhetorical landscape of Florida. Without question, the ongoing reactionary rhetorics in Florida surrounding the civil and human rights of historically oppressed peoples including (but certainly not limited to) POC, women, gay, lesbian, and transgender, disenfranchised, working class, and disabled communities are steeped in and reapplied from rhetorics of the past. Indeed, we invite scholars to consider the history of oppression and its discursive manifestations in the past, present, and future, particularly within Florida.
ASHR recognizes excellent scholarship with two awards: Top Student Paper and Top Faculty Paper. The top student paper will also be entered into the SSCA Robert Bostrom Young Scholar Award competition.
ASHR welcomes two types of submissions: (1) thematic panels and (2) completed papers. For thematic panels, please identify panelists and their institutional affiliations. Preference will be given to proposals with panelists from multiple institutions. Papers should be limited to 25 pages (excluding references).
Competitive Paper Submissions: All submissions must be electronically submitted to the SSCA convention site at https://www.xcdsystem.com/ssca/member. In order for the paper to be assigned for review, please follow all of the instructions on the convention site. For the purposes of anonymous review, please omit all author-identifying information from the manuscript. All papers submitted will be considered for the Division’s Top Paper Award. For student papers, indicate “STUDENT” on the first page of the manuscript, and indicate “Student Paper” during the submission process. The Division’s Top Student Paper will be submitted for consideration for the SSCA Bostrom Young Scholar Award.
Submissions must be submitted online no later than 11:59 p.m. CST on Friday, September 16, 2022. Go to the paper submission site by going to the conference website (https://www.xcdsystem.com/ssca/member) and clicking the submission link. First time visitors to the site will need to create an account. Return visitors will need to make sure to use the same email address that they used to establish the account. To avoid technical problems, early submission is strongly advised. Any submission not meeting the above requirements will not be accepted for review. If you have additional questions, please contact the Division Vice-Chair and Planner Christopher Wernecke – cwernecke1@gsu.edu.
Pertinent to All Calls
Anonymous Review: All papers submitted should follow standard procedures for removing any information that identifies the author and/or the institution within the paper and within any document metadata. Divisions reserve the right to reject any papers not following these standards. Audio-Visual Support: To maintain affordable conference rates, audio-visual support is extremely limited. It must be requested only if needed with supporting rationale, and should be part of the submission to the division planner. Requests will be considered, and are not guaranteed.
Deadlines: All division and interest group calls are due on September 16th, by 11:59 p.m. PST.
Panel Proposals: Best practices in the interest of divisions is to submit a proposal with a diverse panel, comprised of individuals representing different institutions, and where possible and relevant, potential new members.
Submission Protocol: Submissions to SSCA must be original research that has not been published or presented at another regional, national, or international conference. Also, the same paper or panel should not be submitted to more than one division.
Student Papers: In order for a submission to be considered a student paper and to be eligible for student awards or recognition, the author or authors of the paper must all be students at the time the papers is submitted. A paper co-authored by a student and a faculty member, for instance, will not be classified as a student paper.
