Call for Papers
The 12th Australian Media Traditions Conference will be hosted by Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. The conference will be virtual, with further details to be advised.
The AMT2021 conference theme is “Exploring the Regions”, and will focus on questions and issues relating to the diverse history of rural and regional media, both in Australia and abroad. The conference theme aims to address the history and importance of rural and regional media. From the initial introduction and establishment, through to more recent developments.
We invite papers that focus on any of the following: media institutions (newspaper, magazine, radio, television and cinema), advertising, audiences, booksellers and booktowns, digital gaming, journalism, libraries, media preservation and archiving, policy and regulation, publishers and printers, and technological developments. The organisers also wish to advance discussion on the importance of media preservation and archiving.
Topics to be discussed could include:
- The establishment and/or disbandment of rural and/or regional media;
- Rural and regional media research in the context of local content and local audiences;
- Comparative research associated with rural, regional and metropolitan media (Australian and international);
- The role and history of rural and regional indigenous media;
- Rural and regional media as a news source for communities;
- The production of rural and regional community media;
- The history of memory, place and/or emotions;
- Methodologies and approaches to media preservation and archiving.
Proposal Information
Paper and panel presentation proposals should attempt to critically engage in some way with the conference theme, “Exploring the Regions”. However, proposals related to other aspects of mediahistory will also be considered. Practical workshops should focus on media preservation and archiving.
The organising committee strongly encourages proposals from media practitioners, postgraduate students, independent scholars and local historians.
PAPERS:
Papers for the conference will be 20 mins. Each proposal should include the following information:
- Abstract - 250-word
- Biography - 100-word for each author. Please also note who will be presenting.
PANELS:
Panel presentations for the conference can include up to 4 speakers*. Panels should be organised around a specified topic chaired by a moderator.
Each proposal should include the following information:
- Abstract - 250-word
- Biography - 100-word for each participant.
*Allocated time for panels will be determined by the conference organising committee
WORKSHOPS:
Proposals for workshops should be organised around the issue of media preservation and archiving, with particular relevance to regional media. These could include specific tools, methodologies or approach. The workshops should also be able to be conducted virtually.
Each proposal should include the following information:
- Abstract - 250-word
- Biography - 100-word for each workshop presenter.
