#2 - What's New? December Edition

Accessibility and Lobstah Rolls

Hi Friend!

It's been awhile!

I hope you all are doing well and taking care of yourselves. That said, we're in December now and headed for the home stretch in 2020! I'm sending this out a little earlier than the first Monday of the month because I have some exciting news to share!

Here's what's going on!

  1. Still working on the Eleventy restaurant project. Thanks to Tanner Dolby for help with the menu!
  2. Still working on the Style Stage theme! Thanks to Jhey Tompkins for help with some animation. (I've said too much!)
  3. Season One of the Front End Nerdery Podcast has all twelve guests line up for the monthly podcast. There is a list of people that have said "yes" to my invite, so there will be a second (possibly third) season!
  4. I will be speaking at BarCamp Philly giving a talk on color contrast and accessibility on the 5th of December!
  5. The podcast has a Twitter account! Go follow it!

Alternative text helps convey the content of the image to blind screen reader users. Each image you use has a function and alternative text only helps. For example:

<img src="lobsterlogo.jpg" alt="Maine Lobster Company - Fresh Maine Lobsters delivered to you!">

There are several kinds of images to keep in mind when doing accessible images:

  1. Informative images
  2. Decorative images
  3. Functional images
  4. Textual images
  5. Complex images
  6. Groups of images
  7. Image maps

Here's a good flowchart to help you decide how to use alternative text

Recipe of the Month 🦞

It's an easy one that many people ask me that takes a few minutes to put together with very little mess. It's how to make a Maine-style lobster roll.

Ingredients:

  • Hot dog rolls
  • Salted butter
  • Lettuce
  • Lobster meat (very important)
  • Mayonnaise

  1. Hot dog rolls, butter (salted) both sides of the rolls and brown them on a flat top or in a pan.
  2. Add lettuce to the inside bottom of the rolls.
  3. Lightly toss some mayonnaise in with the lobster meat. Just enough to coat the meat.
  4. Add lobster meat & mayo mix to the roll.
  5. Done! 🦞

So I said last month I was going to announce who I was going to have on the first episode of the podcast, but I am going to hold off on that and let you find out who that is when I publish that episode. By the time this shows in your inbox, I'll have already taped the episode today.

I love surprises! 🎉

I decided to remove the Joke of the Month in order to keep the newsletter short as possible.

Don't forget that you can catch me streaming on Twitch, support me on Patreon Patrons get some special bonuses, and follow me on Twitter! You can find the links below where you can find me and ask any questions you may have.

Until then, make something great!
