Ways of Knowing

Journaling Toward Creative Clarity

Dear reader,

I count it a privilege every Monday to beam into your inbox and tell you my latest thoughts. Today is no different. Each week I wake up excited that it is Monday (Monday) and that my creative form gets to find its favorite container.

I’ve been journaling more than usual the last few months, finding my way through serious PMDD, depression, and career questions. I tend to the page not because I don’t know, but because it gives me a way of knowing. A way of finding out what steps it will take for me to pivot, for me to change course, or for me to uplevel or downgrade my experience.

I’ve been dreaming of having a public studio again, a little shop space for quilts and books and zines and home goods. A pivot from my roadside stand idea. Ideas and changes like this come to me when I’m journaling, when my hand is pen to paper and moving at a rapid pace. I don’t edit myself when I’m journaling, I barely have time to ask what wants to come through. I let the speed of my thoughts guide me and get the words down.

With so much air in my chart and being a manifestor in Human Design I find myself floating along, informing people as best I can, but the impact can be quite strong. The impact of sharing something that might feel insignificant to me puts great weight on the recipient. So I try to be tender with my language, bringing the most confused parts of myself to the private analog page.

I’d like to tell you about a class I am teaching this weekend, live on zoom, all about journaling. The class is called Ways of Knowing : Journaling Toward Creative Clarity.

I developed this class because I wanted to share what I am most excited about right now, which is having a consistent contemplative writing practice that informs my creative writing, my business, and my personal life.

Through a series of prompts and sharing out loud (if you want!) we’ll spend time with our journals and develop entry points that give us clarity on what is next. If you’re feeling into a pivot in your career, home life, or art practice this class is for you.

Sometimes needing to pivot can be a source of anxiety and stress, journaling helps me see it as an exciting opportunity. I can start to see where possibility for invention and rebirth is at every corner of my personal practice. I have reinvented myself so many times in the last thirty-eight years, failing and flailing my way through.

I have many other analog writing practices like my daily gratitude list, other list making assignments, and letter writing.

There are so many ways to have a writing practice, on and off the screen. I hope you’ll join me for Ways of Knowing this weekend to develop, strengthen, and expand your own efforts.
