Dear reader, 

The Monday after October 7, 2023 I wrote a newsletter that lost me thousands of followers and many peers. It also solidified my work in a movement that had been happening for decades without me, and put me in a position where friendships that had been slowly fading would fade permanently.

I will never regret that newsletter, or the work I have done toward a Free Palestine since that day. Work I was late to the table to, but work that I have committed to staying with in both loud and quiet ways. Whether that be using the Paying Attention To section of this newsletter, redistributing my own money, or raising thousands of dollars through quilt raffles. For a self employed creative person like myself this short list feels like the bare minimum.

Beyond these actions I have found being in conversation with those who need a little more convincing that saying Free Palestine isn’t anti semitic or dangerous in some way has been helpful and I have really watched it shift perspectives in family and community.

One thing about returning to social media is you watch things unfold in real time. This week celebrities really showed themselves and which side of history they were going to land on. Which side of right now they are landing on. While this doesn’t shock me, it did propel me to think about my own work, and where I’ve been shining a light or not.

There are many directions for me to look. First toward the people of Gaza - What are they asking for, demanding, desiring, and hoping for? Palestinian activisits, poets, and journalists - What are they reporting on, what stories are they telling? To activists deep in the movement - What are they sharing, calling for, and modeling in their leadership? And lastly as a white person whose tax dollars are funding this genocide - What are other white people with privilege and platform doing? This week I spent my first real bit of time with Ms. Rachel’s work. Seeing her dedication, unfailing consistency, and hands on approach inspired me to make my own small changes.

In the last three years it has become less and less “risky” to come out of the wood work and speak out against the horrific genocidal actions of the Israeli government, a zionist death cult, and speak truth to the longstanding occupation that Palestine faces. My hope in writing today is that we all become less afraid to stand by what is right and true. My friends most dedicated to this work are Jewish, and for this I am so grateful to be woven in. They prove to me over and over again that to support a liberated and sovereign Palestine says nothing against being Jewish.

You could even send $5, or perhaps you have $200, or maybe you’re one of the really famous people I used to hang out with who has never said anything and you want to send one million dollars and start talking about it. You are not too late. You will not lose your career. There are still children under the rubble, still blockades, still pain, still suffering, still genocide.

I am no expert, but I know I want to be a voice in the chorus of action.

May you find your entry point. May you use your art to speak justice into being. May fear slip away so that you can be of service to those who need it most.

Long live Palestine.

For me, creative projects (like my quilted banner above that I raffled off or using this newsletter to talk about my values) are a great way to show up and make real change. They are not separate, they are intertwined.
