Not Another Online Community
finding the pace for what matters

Dear reader,
Tomorrow begins a new chapter of Landscapes, a writing co-working group for all genres.
We meet regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-10am PST / 11-1pm EST live on zoom
The group is forming beautifully with many returning members, Flexible Office friends joining, and newcomers introducing themselves in Circle (where our digital hub is hosted).
I know there can be a lot of overwhelm with how many digital communities there are to join. One for your money habits, one for business, one for no or less social media, one for art making, one for codependency, one for writing, and so many more.
My aim is that Landscapes doesn’t take up your time, but that it makes time for you. That it expands your possibilities and grants luxury to how you approach your writing practice.
Putting four hours a week in your calendar for writing (or two if you only can commit to one of the days) can be a transformative action in your creative process. Going towards devotion as an access point to discipline. Finding the time and protecting it as a survival mechanism, because without writing we are disconnected from language.

This weekend I went with my friends Geoff and Micah to see a new Mary Oliver documentary. Keep an eye out for it this Summer in a theatre near you or on PBS, I can’t recommend it enough. Mary didn’t begin to receive her prestige and fame until she was in her 40’s, and then didn’t even really emerge to the public until her later life after her partner Molly Malone Cook had passed away. The life of a writer can be varied and different. You might be an outgoing city dweller who rose to fame in your twenties on Tik Tok, or a quiet morning pages devotee in your seventies living in a small rural town.
One thing I feel committed to in my life right now is being outside more, even if it is just to sit on the bench up by the meadow. To be more connected to the natural world. I started a running practice last week and managed to run three times, alternating jogging and walking for one minute each eight times. By the third time I didn’t completely hate it.
On the walk to the movie I asked Micah and Geoff everything I could about running, two men committed to the outdoors both in protecting it with action and art and experiencing it in body. They revealed to me what they listen to on their runs, gave me shoe recommendations, and overall encouraged me to go at my own pace, even if I’m running a race. Finding the pace for what matters.
I see my new committment to running in a similar way I see my commitment to writing. I just have to show up. I just have to tie my running shoes and open the front door. I just have to show up to the zoom room with a willingness to open the blank document.

Wherever you are in your writing life, you are welcome at Landscapes. We vary in background, age, race, class, and priorities. But we come together for a common purpose : to focus on our writing in a world that pulls our attention to a million other places throughout the day.
Your first week is always free - and if you sign up in the next twenty four hours you get three bonus classes : Organizing a Day, Echoes of Self, and Ritual Technologies. All classes to support you in planning and self publishing your work.
Registration will remain open for the next two weeks and then we go back to a waitlist.
You don’t have to be a writer to join, you can just be someone who writes. Someone who wants to write. Someone who wishes they wrote. Alas, if you stay long enough, a writer you may become.
I don’t think Landscapes is like other online communities. There is both a sense of deep connection amongst members, and a sense of autonomy. You can participate as much or as little as you’d like. We keep cameras off for co-working to develop deep focus, and keep them on (if you want!) for our three monthly events : Guest Workshop, Office Hours, and Admin Hours.
Alas, you can read all about it on the landing page on my website if you haven’t already clicked through.
Let me know if you have any questions, I’m looking forward to seeing what projects everyone brings to the table.
