I was running late today to go get body work and remembered I needed to stop by my PO Box. I grabbed my mail from my box and spun around to race back out the door when a woman in her 70’s or 80’s who was at the counter got to the door first, moving with a slowness matched only to a snail.
Before I could be annoyed my eye caught her dress, this gorgeous all black number with mesh 3/4 sleeves, her hair in this perfect curly bob. She opened the second door and I grabbed it from above her hand and she said - oh good this one is so heavy. We walked down the ramp together and to the back of her head I said - I love your dress.
We got to the sidewalk and she thanked me and said it was from her boutique, across from the gas station. I introduced myself and said I’d just moved to town, she introduced herself as Mary and asked - What do you like to do here?
She did not ask - What do you do here?
I told her I like to swim and write books and make quilts and walk my dog
I asked how long she’s lived here and she said 35 years
I said - wow Mary that is exactly one more year then I have been on Earth
She replied, I like that
I like that too Mary
What a gift to grab the second door
