In the Effort of the Analog
Introducing PROMPTS

Dear Reader,
What is known to me is yet to be revealed, but what I do know is I have wanted to create an analog newsletter for years. It always felt like a bad business idea, an unscalable offering, something tedious that wouldn’t make enough money to prove itself practical.
What I know now more than ever about my creative and business decisions is that I don’t make them out of practicality. I make them out of delight, out of selfish interest, and out of tapping into the desires of my readers.
I originally came up with PROMPTS as a way to feel like we are in a year long writing school that never requires us to be online. That every month we explore a theme and have writing experiments that go along with that theme. That you can open up your monthly envelope with your drink and a candle lit and a flower essence and go through the prompts and letter as you please.
This project grew out of my MFA program, wanting a place to put my research and curiosities beyond Cody’s World and focus them in an offline space.
I am working on so many different creative projects right now, ones that I don’t feel like putting on the internet or synthesizing for this newsletter, but that feel like a perfect fit for a monthly letter and series of prompts for a small number of readers.
Perhaps it will be a big number of readers. Maybe many of you will flock to this project, or just a few. This is how I know a practice is important to me. That I can’t measure the feasibility with an online class from a marketing girlie. I have to just trust that it will be in perfect reciprocity.
I’ve been thinking a lot about pricing lately, and at first I had priced it at $11/month or $111/ year. Partly because it looked so pretty, and to incentivize people to sign up for the full year at a discounted rate.
After a 1:1 session with Podge Thomas we talked in detail about pricing structures and I was struck by how I had missed seeing this small and “normalized” discount as a reward for those who have more money, and a punishment for those who have to pay in installments. In the same way that I don’t charge interest to use a payment plan for any of my classes, I realized it didn’t feel right to charge less for the year. So the price is the same - $11/mo or $132 for the year and you get a bonus welcome letter with either pricing model if you sign up before January 1.
The choice remains your own in that signing up for a full year is one charge you don’t have to think about, and monthly allows you to pay in installments and also cancel if you don’t find benefit from it.
PROMPTS is not a content stream, but a correspondence. An invitation to sit down without your phone or a screen and not scroll.
Each month and each season I offer a new point of focus.

“Cody’s writing prompts always have such an amazing feel to them. Always poetic, never overly prescriptive. I love sitting down with Cody’s prompts after a class and having time in solitude to explore my inner landscape.” - Stacy, student from The Tapestry and The Web online course
If you want to read even more about who it’s for, what it includes, and what it feels like you can read the page here.
I’d love to send you mail every month. I already got very pretty envelopes and special stamps and stickers and a custom return address stamp.
PROMPTS is a practice of staying close to your own thinking.
Of letting language arrive without urgency.
Of trusting that what you’re drawn to—again and again—is enough.
If this feels like something you’ve been missing,
if you want a year-long writing school that lives on your kitchen table instead of your screen,
if you want to be in conversation rather than consumption—you are warmly invited.
Whether many come or just a few, this is work I am committed to making with care, in reciprocity, one letter at a time.
