Can metal-eating trees clean up abandoned mines? Does seaweed have the potential to save the planet? While these ideas might seem outlandish, they are all examples of actual solutions to our environmental issues people are working on right now.
ð§ (https://www.myclimatejourney.co/cc-episodes/bill-weihl-climatevoice) (http://www.sustainababble.fish/?p=1338) #219:ECOCIDE (http://www.sustainababble.fish/?p=1338) A wise person once said that when it comes to buggering up the planet, prison is an underused deterrent. And just why should it be OK to be an Earth-nausing Inhofe with impunity? NO WE AGREE WITH YOU, IT SHOULD NOT.
ð§ Climate, Fossil Fuels and the Future of Shell with Ben van Beurden (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/108-climate-fossil-fuels-and-the-future-of-shell-with-ben-van-beurden) In May 2021, the District Court in The Hague delivered its landmark ruling in the climate change case filed against Royal Dutch Shell (âShellâ). In her ruling on the case, Judge Larisa Alwin ordered Shell to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030 from 2019 levels. The court found that Shellâs existing carbon mitigation strategy was ânot concrete and is full of conditions … that’s not enough.â The court also ruled that Shell is responsible for emissions from its customers and suppliers, known as scope 3 emissions, and further that Shellâs activities constituted a threat to the âright to lifeâ and âundisturbed family life,â as set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.
ð§ E3: TIL about sea level rise, part 2 (https://climate.mit.edu/podcasts/til-about-sea-level-rise-part-2) Sea level rise is already happening and affecting people right now. We invited Prof. James Renwick back to TILclimate to talk about the near future: what will sea level rise look like for coastal areas in the next 20 or 30 years, and what can we do about it?
ð§ Atypical Ep 2: Sustainability Defined Staff (Matt Arends and Amelia Kovacs) (https://sustainabilitydefined.com/atypicalep2) Itâs not just Jay and Scott behind Sustainability Defined. We have volunteers and paid staff that help us with research, social media, etc. Today for an atypical episode we want to highlight a couple staff members, one who has played a critical role for years and is leaving the podcast for an exciting opportunity in market garden farming, and another who is just joining the team after being a devoted listener and studying and working in sustainability. The outgoing staff member is Matt Arends.
ð§ Clearing The Air On Carbon Offsets (https://www.climateone.org/audio/clearing-air-carbon-offsets) For more than two decades, carbon offset programs have promised individuals and businesses that they can reduce their overall carbon footprint by paying someone else - somewhere else - to reduce their emissions. But in practice this often doesnât accomplish the intended climate benefit.
Don’t forget, if you’re looking around, there’s a list of podcasts maintained by CATs (https://www.degreespod.com/episodes/bonus-episodes) .

ð CATITUDE

Geddit? No? Jeez⦠tough crowd.
We’re very open to suggestions for better cat themed puns around the concept of gratefulness, as we clearly need help hereâ¦
This week we wanted to give a shout-out to all of you lovely folks who are supporting the community financially through OpenCollective (https://opencollective.com/climateaction-tech) .

If you want to appear in this list, simply make sure a thread in a channel is either summarised in the ask-anything section or the relevant channel page.
Finally huge thanks to the following CATs for volunteering in the community: @Hannah, @Brittany Fischer, @Jemma Harwood, @Matthew Ferry, @Alicia Wong, @Sarah, @Kaushal, @Pia Faustino, @Deena Rosen, @Sarah, @Joshua Cortez, @Andrew O’Regan, @Antonio, @Sofia Rufino, @lil nat, @Katrin, @Su, @roundcrisis, @piyush, @LuÃs Cruz, @Nadia Z, @Rebecca Stevenson, @Marketa Benisek, @Marwa Eltaib, @Malia, @Noel Anthony You made it to the end! ðPlease share & forward this newsletter to a friend Feedback (https://app.slack.com/client/T4HLEQA3F/CLRPE39NX/thread/C4J8RQ2J3-1568299902.131900) ⢠Subscribe (https://tech.us19.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=08b8a799dd414ce9163cf3474&id=97c1d5f785) ⢠Join CAT (https://climateaction.tech/#join)
