Hey CATs!
Last year, we launched CAT’s first magazine Branch. We wanted to provide a good starting point for technologists trying to figure out how to think about the intersection climate and tech, to highlight work by members in this community, and also expand the discourse around the issue. We were pretty proud of it, but it looks like some other people like it too - Branch has won the Ars Electronica Digital Humanity award this year (https://ars.electronica.art/prix/en/digitalhumanity/) - w00t!
Branch Issue two is out this week, and you can join the branch-only notiication list to get early noticce as soon as it’s live (https://branch.climateaction.tech/subscribe-to-branch-magazine/) .
:flashlight: Channel spotlight: # (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01CKLQ09QS) local-southeast-asia (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01J757L006) CAT historically has had loads of members from Western Europe and North America, and #local channels set up by members accordingly. But if you’re outside these regions, it’s worth knowing there are others, like for south east asia (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01J757L006) , and india (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/CJ4LHTMB4) and so on. They help to find fellow CATs in a similar situation to you. If you’re in the global North, it’s useful to understand how the conversation is different.

A Carbon Takeback Obligation is a policy framework that aims to make that the new standard. Today we learn more about how such a system might operate.

Is Amazon terrible for the planet or is it just, yâknow, big? And if it is bad, is it any worse than thousands of little shops selling crap we donât need?
ð§Why Dale Vince is a Successful Serial Climate Entrepreneur (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/105-why-dale-vince-is-a-successful-serial-climate-entrepreneur) With the G7 Summit happening in just a few days, things are looking good for it being a big moment for climate. Foreign Ministers have noted the impact of climate change on the most vulnerable, Health Ministers have made the link between health and the environment, Finance Ministers have supported mandating climate related disclosures…the momentum is real. But weâve been here before with the same words and no action, so what is different this time around?
ð§COLORADO RIVER RECKONING: DROUGHT, CLIMATE AND EQUAL ACCESS (https://www.climateone.org/audio/colorado-river-reckoning-drought-climate-and-equal-access) The Colorado River hydrates more than 40 million people and 5 million acres of farmland from Wyoming to the US-Mexico border – but it’s not equally divided. And as our climate gets hotter and drier, water managers worry there simply may no longer be enough to go around.
Don’t forget, if you’re looking around, there’s a list of podcasts maintained by CATs (https://www.degreespod.com/episodes/bonus-episodes) .
ð° News Highlights
US News that will likely have global impacts - new chairt of the US Federal Trade Commission (https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2021/06/lina-khan-sworn-chair-ftc) Tech companies maybe largest corporate buyers of renwables on the planet, but from a climate justice perspective, the record can often be less convincing. This week, Lina Khan was sworn in as the new chair of the US Federal Trade Commission - this is interesting because it suggests a shift the balance of power, especially when you consider the increasingly public fights over governance in large tech firms. How does this relate to tech? Here’s Emily Cunningham, founding member of Amazon for Climate on why (https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1365207182581489666) .
France approves text of on Digital Environmental footprint (in French, but readable with translation services) (https://www.ouest-france.fr/high-tech/l-assemblee-approuve-le-texte-de-loi-sur-la-reduction-de-l-empreinte-environnementale-du-numerique-7296866) The first law explicitly referring to sustainability in the digital realm has been passed by French parliament, and is one step away from being a legally binding law in France. It would enshrine many of the ideas described in #green-infra and #greener-web-perf in law, and change the economics around electronics, to promote re-use, and recyling, and responsible disposal.
Unileverâs new nano-factories fit in a shipping container, so they can go anywhere in the world (https://www.fastcompany.com/90597168/unilevers-new-nano-factories-fit-in-a-shipping-container-so-they-can-go-anywhere-in-the-world) Designed to make small batches of products with local materials, the consumer goods giant hopes the new factories can cut down on their footprint by allowing them to make products closer to the source.
