Register here (http://bit.ly/CATWelcomeEastern) . * ð Take a few minutes to fill out the survey linked below from Climate Coaching Alliance

They’ve agreed to share back what they learn, so if you’re an employee of a company, wanting to see more action, take a few minutes to complete their survey (https://1wp9sg6lsb9.typeform.com/to/w5FwJDc0) .

ð¤ Podcasts The latest climate-related podcast episodes.
ð§ (https://www.myclimatejourney.co/cc-episodes/bill-weihl-climatevoice) (http://https://nori.com/podcasts/reversing-climate-change/Grounded-A-Fierce–Feminine-Guide-to-Connecting-with-the-Soilw-Dr–Erin-Yu-Juin-McMorrow–author-e10fc0v) Nori’s Past, Present, & Future: An Updateâw/ Josh Felser, climate investor (https://nori.com/podcasts/reversing-climate-change/Noris-Past–Present—Future-An-Updatew-Josh-Felser–climate-investor-e119j8j) Nori has evolved a great deal since its founding in 2017, and today, the team is ready to shift from a build-to-learn prototype to a build-to-scale model. The product team is working to reduce friction in the supply experience, while the sales team develops a repeatable, scalable business model. So, what progress have they made in the last year? And where is there still room for growth?
ð§Cooling Conflict by Tackling the Climate Crisis with Jens Stoltenberg (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/102-cooling-conflict-by-tackling-the-climate-crisis-with-jens-stoltenberg) This week on the show we discuss the latest IEA Report, âNet Zero by 2050â which charts a path for the energy sector to achieve a 1.5 degree world, and specifically naming the 400 milestones that will get us there. Itâs an incredible marker in this decisive decade because the IEA is the gold standard for energy policy around the globe (particularly for Oil and Gas), and in this report they explicitly detail the urgent and irreversible need for a rapid and comprehensive shift away from fossil fuels.
ð§HOT CITIES, METHANE LEAKERS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (https://www.climateone.org/audio/hot-cities-methane-leakers-and-catholic-church) In 2017, it got so hot in Phoenix that airplanes literally could not take off, and airlines cancelled dozens of flights. Extreme heat is likely to become more common, and last longer, as climate disruption continues.
Don’t forget, if you’re looking around, there’s a list of podcasts maintained by CATs (https://www.degreespod.com/episodes/bonus-episodes) .
ð° News Highlights
Twenty firms produce 55% of worldâs plastic waste, report reveals (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/18/twenty-firms-produce-55-of-worlds-plastic-waste-report-reveals) Plastic Waste Makers index identifies those driving climate crisis with virgin polymer production
Achieving Net Zero carbon emissions: a review of the evidence behind carbon offsetting (https://www.gov.uk/flood-and-coastal-erosion-risk-management-research-reports/achieving-net-zero-carbon-emissions-a-review-of-the-evidence-behind-carbon-offsetting) This report has reviewed the evidence behind carbon offsetting looking at a wide range of different offsetting approaches which could be used in the UK.
UK ETS: Post-Brexit carbon market opens for first time with carbon price topping £50 per tonne (https://www.edie.net/news/11/UK-ETS–Post-Brexit-carbon-market-opens-for-first-time-with-carbon-price-topping–50-per-tonne/) The UK’s carbon price has hit £50 as the nation’s post-Brexit emissions trading scheme (ETS) opened for the first time on Wednesday morning (19 May).
Google invests in new advanced geothermal to keep its datacentres running, to complement wind and solar (https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/google-fervo-geothermal-project-creates-carbon-free-energy) This is interesting, because providing fossil-free non-intermittent power is really hard, and historically not something companies invest in. Google say they’ll be relying on Geothermal next year in the states, and the page has a bunch of cool viz. See also, the thread from the CEO, Tim Latimer (https://twitter.com/TimMLatimer/status/1394735390628761602) .
Google now moving computing work across space as well as time (https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/sustainability/carbon-aware-computing-location) This interesting because historically, while doing this has been possible for ages, very few companies have actually spokek about moving compute jobs around geographically to where you have clean energy. This is the first example of a such well known high profile company doing this kind of work, but startups like Lancium (https://lancium.com/) , Examesh (https://examesh.de/en/) and Helio (http://helio.exchange/) have been doing this a while too.
How Your Hot Showers And Toilet Flushes Can Help the Climate (https://www.npr.org/2021/05/21/997954472/how-your-hot-showers-and-toilet-flushes-can-help-the-climate) Evolving technology is making it possible to turn sewage wastewater into energy that can heat and cool large buildings. The largest such project in the U.S. is under construction in Denver.
A bunch of ex-Fairphone CATs are setting up to make fair and sustainable USB cables (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/CGA9AQJER/p1621876523014200) You’ll probably buy a USB cable before you buy a new phone or laptop, and the most sustainable gadgets possible are ones you already have. Wouldn’t it be nice if this was the norm for all cables ?
