Hey CATs!
Hope youâre all doing well, having inspiring conversations, enjoying local food, playing with interesting ideas and taking breaks when you need them. ð
Iâve got a few organiser updates/questions for you on this lovely Monday: 1. ð Local channels: With our new #local-east-asia (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C018DN4U9SB) channel, we hope that a few of you folks have an easier time finding your neighbours. Weâre also aware that we have a few folks from across Africa in this community and we were wondering if one of you would be up for starting your own #local-africa channel? 2. â Volunteering: If you want to volunteer within CAT, we put together this handy list with tasks (https://docs.google.com/document/d/17OOsjrnDwlFOO_Xr47sjtOL-jT1d3P7hVYdI3r_Q1R4/edit?usp=sharing) to choose from. Also join #d-cat-volunteering (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C017V9MDW6Q) or ask any of us organisers for more help. 3. ð¥ CAT Salon West recording: On the topic âIf you build it, will they come?â we had @Nish (https://climate-tech.slack.com/team/U010LBDA7GX) talk about how to evaluate a whether a climate project is gonna be worthwhile. Watch it here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA3p408J2O0) . 4. ð CAT Salon East: âOur food journeyâ with lead discussant @Bren (https://climate-tech.slack.com/team/U017P1XLHAL) (who also started #d-food-and-climate (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C017HQGLZSP) ) is happening today! Solving for SMEs w/ Dr. Ariel Edesess (https://theclimatefix.com/episodes/solving-for-smes-w-dr-ariel-edesess) ð August 12, 2020 99.9% of all businesses in the UK have fewer than 250 employees and produce 60% of all the commercial sector emissions. Big companies get the headlines, but how do you help transition this long tail of businesses to a lower-carbon future? That’s what Dr. Ariel Edesess is focussing on as a postdoctoral researcher with the Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory. TheClimateFix.com

ð August 11, 2020 There is a temptation to believe that science and technology will save us from climate change, while we continue business as usual. But we have already emitted huge levels of CO2 into the atmosphere, and itâs going to take both carbon capture at the source and direct air capture (DAC) from ambient air to make a dent in the record atmospheric concentration of 415ppm we hit in 2019. 186: TALKING CLIMATE (http://www.sustainababble.fish/?p=1128)
ð August 17, 2020 It is just possible that yelling about wet-bulb temperature and the certain heat death of everything isnât as effective a climate communications strategy as some may think. So what is? Is there A Right Way to discuss ecological destruction? And can it really be true that conversations are opportunities to learn from each other, not just âwinâ someone round? - Hope, Rage and What Weâre Going to Do About It with Jonathon Porritt and Lily Cole (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/65-hope-rage-and-what-were-going-to-do-about-it-with-jonathon-porritt-and-lily-cole) ð Aug 14, 2020 This week! 2 Authors, 1 Crisis. Do we have a “Hope In Hell” to survive the climate crisis, or do we have “Reasons To Be Optimistic” in the face of it? We talk with longtime activist Jonathon Porritt and famous model and actress Lily Cole about their brand new books, and find out the role that both rage and hope play in pushing us to ask ourselves in light of the climate emergency, “What are you going to do about it?” Outrage! + Optimism (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/)
TIL about fusion energy (https://climate.mit.edu/podcasts/til-about-fusion-energy) ð August 13, 2020 Letâs talk about a technology that could change our whole energy system, but so far hasnât generated a single watt. In the season finale of TILclimate (Today I Learned Climate), Professor Dennis Whyte sits down with host Laur Hesse Fisher to talk about fusion energy. FLOODING IN AMERICA (https://climateone.org/audio/flooding-america) ð August 14, 2020 âWe had one of the snowiest winters on record in Lincoln and Omaha,â reports Martha Shulski of the Nebraska Climate Office. Sheâs describing the weather conditions and events that led to what has become known as the âGreat Flood of 2019.â Climate One (https://climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts)
Collective youth-led action is amplifying the climate justice movement (https://www.terra.do/post/collective-youth-led-action-amplifying-climate-justice-movement) ð August 10, 2020 Mitzi Jonelle Tan is 22 years old and she has been an activist since 2017. She graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 2019. During her time in university, she was a student leader in several organizations and was also part of her college student council. Mitzi is the Convenor for Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP) which is an alliance of individuals and youth formations that advocates for immediate climate action led by the youth. In this podcast, Mitzi gives us tangible examples of whatâs happening in the Philippines with climate change. She talks about the work that YACAP is doing and more. She ends with the hope that youth led collective action is needed to give voices to those people who have been marginalised and affected by climate change. Terra.do (https://www.terra.do/blog)
