Green IO: Debriefing Qcon Sustainability track with Erica Pisani

How is sustainability covered in main tech conferences?Ā

Sure cybersecurity, DevOps, or anything related to SRE, is covered at length. Not to mention AI… But what room is left for the environmental impact of our job ? And what are the main trends which are filtered out from specialized conferences in Green IT such as Green IO, GreenTech Forum or eco-compute to generic Tech conferences?Ā

To talk about it Gaƫl Duez sat down in this latest Green IO episode with Erica Pisani who was the MC of the Performance and Sustainability track at QCon London this year.

Catalyst: The state of play of data center development

The future of the grid increasingly hinges on where and how data centers get built. To forecast the kind of power infrastructure we need to meet AI's growing appetite, we first need to understand a laundry list of variables: data center size, workload type, latency, reliability — even the variety of a data center's coolant system.Ā

So what's the state of play in data center development today — and how are the trends shaping grid needs?

Environment Variables: Open Source Carbon Footprints

Chris Adams is joined by Thibaud Colas; product lead at Torchbox, president of the Django Software Foundation, and lead on Wagtail CMS. They explore the role of open source projects in tackling digital carbon emissions and discuss Wagtail's pioneering carbon footprint reporting, sustainable default settings, and grid-aware website features, all enabled through initiatives like Google Summer of Code. Thibaud shares how transparency, contributor motivation, and clear governance can drive impactful sustainability efforts in web development, and why measuring and reducing emissions in the Python ecosystem matters now more than ever.

Code Green: Funding & Framing Asia's Climate Futures

In this episode, the last in a series exploring the tensions surrounding AI, Hanyuan 'Karen' Wang and Luis Felipe R. Murrillo discuss the complex arena of climate finance - highlighting these key tensions and potential pathways forward. Hanyuan discusses the need for tools for businesses to navigate the complex climate policy landscape, and the role of private-sector involvement. Luis highlights the difficulties of collecting quality climate data, the importance of data stewardship in bridging the gaps between experts and community needs, and the potential of 'commoning' as a way to envision alternate, sustainable frameworks and funding models.Ā

Zero - The Climate Race: The device throttling the world's electrified future (Bottlenecks Series)

To slash emissions fast, the formula is simple: electrify everything and clean up the grid. But in practice, progress is slowed by all sorts of bottlenecks — from arcane permitting processes to sky-high electricity costs.

This week on Zero, Akshat Rathi sits down with producer Oscar Boyd to spotlight a surprising culprit slowing the transition: a global shortage of transformers, and why it has industry insiders so worried. This episode kicks off Bottlenecks, a new series exploring the lesser known obstacles standing in the way of our electrified future.Ā

The Climate Question: Can nature help us to store carbon?

Around the world, scientists and entrepreneurs are pouring billions into researching new ways of storing carbon dioxide. We look at a scheme in India to put CO2 in rocks and research in the UK using kelp. Will either of them be effective?

Host Graihagh Jackson dives into the waters off Britain's southern coast to find out more about the magical powers of kelp, while Chhavi Sachdev visits a tea plantation in Darjeeling which is hoping to diversify into carbon sequestration.
