Dear CATs,
I came across a very good tweet yesterday about tackling racism on a systemic level over time. I found it so good, that I want to share a few bits of what Tatiana Mac wrote about in their tweet (https://twitter.com/TatianaTMac/status/1268909345141473281) . Please read the whole thread on twitter as well though because itâs very much worth it. 1. Learning: You canât learn everything rn. Make a list. Learn to find the answers yourself before asking. Take the time to actually look it up. Read multiple sources. Sit with it. 2. Donations: Budget and set up recurring donations. Ask your bosses about recurring matches for donations long-term. 3. Reading: Build Black authors into your life, fiction, non-race-based non-fiction. 4. Consumerism: Boycott massively complicit companies. 5. Calling people out: Evaluate what your long-term commitments to this work are. Build vocab to address racism. Figure out your âif they do this, I will do thisâ.
And because Black Lives Matter has been very much on our minds, we want to talk about this movement as well as the pandemic and racism in relation to climate justice and the tech industry in our #d-cat-salon (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C0144BR1CSX) next week:

175: SWIFTS (http://www.sustainababble.fish/?p=1058)
ð May 31, 2020 Swifts: bloody âell. The weight of a Creme Egg, Apus Apus spend their entire lives in flight; eating, sleeping and shagging on the wing before popping 6,000 miles north to a European roof for a rest and a spot of breeding. Sustainababble (http://www.sustainababble.fish/)
176: NAPPIES (http://www.sustainababble.fish/?p=1064)
ð June 07, 2020 Poor wee infants canât help it but they do produce an awful lot of poo and wee. Ol should know, heâs got two of the little, er, darlings. Problem is, said effluvia ends up in nappies (diapers), overwhelmingly âdisposableâ ones â thousands of them per child. And the nappies end up in the ground, or being burned to make noxious air for us all to breathe. Yuck. Sustainababble (http://www.sustainababble.fish/)
Introducing: So Hot Right Now (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/introducing-so-hot-right-now) ð June 02, 2020 To save the world we need to change the story. Nature and the climate are in crisis. To survive we must use our most powerful tool - communication. Telling these stories can be difficult and dangerous. But done right they can change the world. Join environmental journalist Lucy Siegle (The Guardian, The One Show) and wildlife filmmaker Tom Mustill (Greta Thunberg / #NatureNow & BBC Natural History Unit) as they learn how to communicate better, from those who do it best. This episode looks at the work of the worldâs premiere nature broadcaster, one of the most trusted voices in the world. We ask Sir David Attenborough what he has learnt, what he would do if he was starting his career now, how we can use wonder to fight for nature and what we need to do immediately. A DECADE OF OIL: FROM DEEPWATER HORIZON TO DEFLATION (https://climateone.org/audio/decade-oil-deepwater-horizon-deflation) ð June 05, 2020 America’s latest oil boom began with a bang, literally, on Earth Day, 2010. Thatâs when an offshore oil rig owned by BP exploded, killing eleven workers and spilling nearly five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. John Hofmeister, co-founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy, was in Washington D.C. at the time. Climate One (https://climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts)
